for me.. not you

ejj is giving me his old y-pipe, it's a cattman jet-hot with some external rust that I am going to sand off. then I'm going to use high temp and paint the thing to attempt to stop more rust... then I want to header wrap it then get it installed.

Q: where is the best place to get header wrap and how much do i need? How do I wrap it? and how do I get the ends to stay on?

hey man, wrapping the thing is not a good idea. A header wrap is desinged to stop the header from emitting heat to the engine. It will not help if its a Y pipe.

Also, headerwrap is suppose to be used mainly within the engine bay, where very little water could get into it. For a Y pipe, its going to get wet and the wrap might come off.

I put two pieces on mine in layers. I have now a Warpspeed 2.5 inch pipe and the flex buzzed really steady at all speeds. I spent 7 bucks for six feet of wrap at a local speed shop in Oceanside, I can give you the number later. I fastened them on tight with 2.75 inch hose clamps...but use Mechanix glovces or wait til it cools down cause even with the clamps they heat up really fast. It did the trick though. Worked like a charm and now it sounds much better in the intake and exhaust (stock, mind you) but I should have some more recent photos soon.

i wouldn't wrap it, that accelerates the rust even more.

wrap it! you got the pipe for free, the heat burns off moisture, it will sound stock, hot pipes accellerate exhaust exit velocity. use hose clamps on the ends and overlap half a width. I bought 25' from SummitRacing.com for $25.00. buy the 1" wide stuff.

I was told by the place installing it that it won't last one winter becaue the flex section will rot out due to water.

The wrap can hold moisture in but why dont you just wrap where the hole is? Dont wrap the hole flex section. That defeats the point in it being a flex section. And second when you wrap the whole flex, that puts more pressure on teh welds and joins and that just shortens the life in half.

There's not really a whole in the pipe. The flex section is loud, but its not really leaking. The leak that I had was caused by the y->cat gasket being shot.

I don't know much about your winters as I live in the South. Mine's been wrapped for a year and last week I unwrapped my flex section when I had my car on the lift to check it out--everything was fine, so I wrapped it back up.

Synki-the wrap itself is flexible so it does not interfere.
who knows it may not be the best idea for you guys up north.
If it does rust through, take it to a muffler shop and get it patched up---who cares if it doesn't look pretty--you can't even see it.

i would definetly just deal with the noise. wrapping it up especially where you live, almost in canada, is a BAD idea. the pipe will rot out and rust even worse, if it was a SS one it might work but just deal with it or have them weld on a quieter flex section for like 50 bucks.
