Im thinking about purchasing a Subaru Impreza WRX. Im gonna go test drive one today, ill tell you how it is. They have this silver 5 speed at the local dealership, and I went on sunday to look at cars so no salesmen would bother me. If i get one im going to have to order the blue one though, i think that color is tight.

Well seeing that i had gave a guy a down payment for his, then he decided to wreck it. It was a big hassle also to cancel the greddy turbo order. But now im glad it happened, because i have more money and i can get a new/better car.

Does anyone else here think the Mazda MP3 should have been the new WRX?

Things to be aware of about the WRX:

- the clutch is EXTREMELY weak. Tons of them have been destroyed within months.

- Subi's are notorious for CEL lights, especially the WRX. Hell, I just bought a mint 98 Legacy GT wagon and it threw a code within one day. Turns out the car is VERY sensitive about putting on the gas cap tight. I suggest getting a Auto X-ray OBDII reader because Subaru charges $90 to pull a code....not covered under warranty.

-adding mods tends to give the ECU fits therefore throwing codes.

- the differentials on the WRX seem to be weak

I too would love a WRX and it's ugly lights could quickly be changed with a smoked set from Cobb performance. Another option to consider is a 98+ A4 1.8T. You could pick one up for $16K-18K, go to APR performance and get a turbo upgrade (turbo, manifold, injectors, ECU, downpipe) which could be installed in your garage in a day. Total cost is about $3800 and it takes the A4 from 150hp to about ~280hp with huge torque.

Well for starters, the EVO isn't coming out next year. The Lancer is coming over (sort of) but not the Lancer EVO. There are currently no plans for it to come to America.

I highly agree...I like the look of that new MP3. They either should have made that the WRX or the older impreza RS body style. Either would have done.

I would also warn against getting the WRX. I pulled up next to one today...I took off in 1st gear like I normally do...nice and easy since I have a crappy clutch...and brought it up to about 3500 RPM before I shifted to second.

I had my window open so I could hear the WRX next to me. He stuck even with me the whole time, yet his engine sounded like it was doing MUCH more work than mine. It had a real tinny sound to it, and when he disengaged the clutch to shift to 2nd, his car lurched really badly.

Maxima owners take low end torque for granted...a 4-cylinder sounds like a 4-cylinder, and drives like a 4-cylinder, even if it has 227 hp. I love having low end torque, and would never sacrifice that for a high revving engine that sounds bad. And besides, the WRX only has slightly more torque than my 4th gen.

Well since you asked. I think the WRX is ugly and performance is over estimated. Yes magazine times show them sub 6 seconds and sub 15 1/4 mile but that is with a high rpm clutch drop. I've run with a few on the highway and pulled away from the easily. Yes I realize they can be modded to hell and back but they are ugly. If you drive in the snow I would recommend one for sure! If not I would wait a bit longer to see how you like the Altima 3.5 5spd which from the sounds of it so far is a good price/performer.

car and driver recommends it....

i was watching car and driver on tnn and they did a recent test drive of the 2002 wrx. from what they said, the car does 0-60 in 5.8secs!!! that is damn fast, even if they are exagerating, they can't be off by much. i really like the look of the car, its different. i would still go out and find out what kind of problems the car has and how many, since its a new model. but if you can get one at or below msrp, then go for it, i wouldn't get it if the dealer marked it up a couple grand though, not worth it.

I know a couple people that got it just below retail. But be wary, a couple 5th gens have already taken modded ones out at speed. Quick off the line but that all wheel-drive, and low gearing (peak torque is at 4000) makes it slow at any speed. I was surprised to hear this myself but after all it is just a 4 banger...

hey man, if you're gonna get the WRX, get the white one.

If I was in the market for a new car, I think I'd give the WRX a serious look too. The car is ugly as hell, but you get AWD and easy "mod-ability" in return.
I saw a white one the other day and it looked very cool.

Ok, since you ASKED, I'm going to assume you like the looks of the WRX. Buy a car that you like, not what other people like.

What other people are saying is that the clutch is weak, and it has no power... but I think that the car has pretty good performance. Just because the engine sounds "tinny" doesn't mean it's a bad car... Even my dad's '99 Porsche 911 has a tinny sound that's very typical of Porsche.

The problem is, don't buy the WRX now. It's too new, the dealers are going to milk you because they have NO trouble getting rid of 'em. If you don't like their price, they will kick you onto the street.

Next year, the car will be about 20% or more cheaper. There will be some used ones around, for some really good deals. And by that time you will know what kind of service problems they have.

Another option is looking at the new Altima which people are talking about. The new Altima is going to kick Azz and it'll be priced decently compared to the WRX. I can't believe they're putting a 3.5 on that thing.

Of course, what you **should** do is just buy a maxima...they'res just no reason not to

I would be humble...

..and pick up an old beater...save my pennies..and wait until the new Z car comes out. The WRX is an expensive toy,(overpriced toy), so if it's a toy that you want, get one with some Nissan grunt under the hood..you'll be buying an instant classic that will hold it's value for a long time..and maybe sell for more than it's original purchase price down the road.!

In bone stock form, a 5th gen Max will take a new WRX from a roll. From a standing start, youll probably lose if the WRX guy can drive at all. Granted, the Max will be pulling on the WRX pretty good once it gets going, but the WRX has that "launch appeal".

I raced a lightly modded WRX (boost control at steady 14.5 psi) and it was dead even.

I test drove a stock one last week and it was a dog. With 3 people in the car and the AC on, it felt pitiful. Off boost, it reminded me of my Ford Ranger 2.3L automatic. On boost, it was better, but still didnt have the pull of ole Mad Max.

But, these cars are so easy to mod its pathetic. About $1000 dumped into a WRX, and it will outrun even a S/C Max 5 speed on slicks at the strip. And, the WRX wont need slicks to do it.

I have to agree with all that melanthius says about the WRX including the part about getting another Maxima. The Altima also bears looking into. IMO, the WRX doesn't really offer any more than a stock Maxima in any category and in many it offers less.

Prices on 4th gen Maximas are very low these days and the selection is huge.

The selection is only huge if you want an automagic. 5-speeds are hard to come by.

Yum, drool, slurp...that's what I *plan* on doing.

Does that price include install?
ANd since the '01 A4 1.8T come with 170hp...will it produce an additional 20hp?
