What cause clicking when the upper spring mount bearing is shot?

Is it because the upper spring mount can't rotate when you turn the steering wheel? I have the 'clicks' on one side.

There is a rubber grommet in there. Maybe it has worn thru and you have intermittent metal to metal contact.

worn due to incorrect install.. intalled upside down
