It's on my rims...especially the front wheels. I don't know if it's brake dusts or not. I don't wash my rims all the time, but when I do, the black gunk is there. Could it be brake dust build up? The black gunk is sticky, paste like, and very hard to clean off. I need to use my fingernails to get them off. I have thought of other things that might cause this black gunk. Bad brake pads(Axiss Metal Masters), warped rotors, or some kind of leak somewhere else? As you can tell, I have NO IDEA! Please help me out. I don't want my new rims be ruined. Thanks.

I'm not sure what is it. It could be the CV Boot. However, if the it's a leaking CV Boot, shouldn't there be some kind of oily substance accompanying it? I don't have that, just the black, sticky gunk. It does feels a bit tar like though.

Anyway, I'll try to clean it off tomorrow. I just hope I can do so without scratching my rims.

Is the black gunk on all 4 rims or just 1? If it's on all of them you can rule out the CV joint theory. BTW I have found hard black gunk on my rims from time to time too.

No, just the front rims. Especially, the driver side one.

be careful about what you use to clean your rims. don't have any strong degreasers or abrasives.

i'm telling you from experience

Yes, it's on there pretty good. Almost like it's baked on.

No, I didn't use any kind of tire shining product.

Well, I tried to get the black gunk off my front rim, I could only get a bit off. I used my fingernails and scratched as hard as I can; it didn't work. I noticed something else, I do have a bit of the black gunk on the rear driver side rim too. It's just a small piece, I used my fingernails to pluck it off, but it still left a very hard to clean off residue. Even the residue is sticky. I'm starting to think it's tar. I don't know what to do now. What can I use to get the black gunk off without harming my rims? I just don't want to damage my rims.

About the WD-40, will that harm my rims? In the past I used it to get off some sticky residue(emblems remover) and they worked really well.

It's probably tar. Try getting some tar remover and see if that works. Good luck

Yes, trying to remove tar with a tar remover make sense. Sorry, my mind is wandering again.
