Some of us 3rd gen are experiencing intermittent power loss and low mileage issues. With all other basic mechanical items being check I was thinking of cleaning the MAF if any good will occur. I realize it's a electronic devise and have to be careful not to render it useless, so this is why I'm asking my question. If it is safe what can be used?

DBM has said if the MAFS is broken you can try using carb cleaner, whether or not it will fix it does not matter becuase it is all ready broken.

But you on the other hand, have a semi functional MAFS so cleaning it with carb cleaner could be risky but at the same time it might help. The choice is yours.
