purpose of flex in y?

I was wondering what the purpose of the flex in the y-pipe was for. I was thinking of taking it out and welding on a piece of piping. Is that a no, no? I was thinking of doing this, b/c I'm getting tired of the "bees in the can" that came w/ the first version of y's from stillens

Dude! If you did that.. every time you cranked your engine or downshifted or whatever.. all the pipes under your car would shake.. I think that would be way worse! It will probably cause leaks at the connecting parts too.
