I invade a secret TOYOTA dealers meeting

So I live in a Mariott hotel beacase its the only place my school could stick me for the three remaining months I'm at rit...

I'm outside cleaning my car when about 6-8 new camrys pull in with guys who have toyota shirts on and they get out and set up a toyota banner and start talking (they are about 100 feet away) they are all looking at my car and pointing a talking and looking at the camrys...

then a new altima rolls in drivin by a toyota guy. all the others are looking at the altima and I can hear them mention my maxima and how cool it looks etc...

I pretent I'm working on the engine and start it up and look around under the hood and rev it up a few times... they all stop what they are doing and I can hear one of them say "DAMN!!! that is sick" but they won't come over and talk...

I decide to go back to my room but on my way back I ignore all the camrys and stop and check out the altima....

i think they know they are going down!

then allow me to clarify - here are the cliff notes:

Toyota was having a conference at a hotel to talk about the altima as competition.

The meeting was in a parking lot where I park my car.

I was outside working on my car when the meeting started.

They like the altima better than the camry and my maxima more than either.

Toyota is going to lose camry sales to the new altima.

How do you know this? To me, your statements don't really point that out.....

Toyota is going to lose camry sales to the new altima.
Toyota Camry is a dog....looks like a freshened Ford Taurus....the first time I saw it, I thought it was the '02 Taurus.....

Camry will sell because of build quality. 25-30k Altimas won't because of build quality......

I like the Altima better from a looks/features standpoint, but every major mag that's reviewed it and the members here that have test driven it loathe the build quality....and that's people who have put up with Minimas' sloppy build quality and are used to it......I would be concerned if I were a Nissan employee....

it was just the impression that I got... I think that the altima will do well beacuse of the power and looks... but I guess we'll just have to wait and see... I don't think your points are wrong, just that its too early for either of us to really say. But I'm sure from the impressions that the toyota guys had that they liked the looks of the altima

Same could be said of the interior quality on the Altima.

I don't know why you guys say the Maxima has bad build quality. On a stock Maxima (GLE in my case) there are no rattles or sqeaks. When you go over bumps or imperfections on the road you only hear a thump. The dash doesn't rattle nor sqeak. The interior looks opulent.

As for the new Altima. The interior looks good, but they said that the fabric doesn't line up or the stitching is sub-par.

Who cares?? As long as it doesn't tear to break, its fine. When your inside a car, you look at the dash and stuff, it doesn't matter if the material doesn't seem to be in line as long as its pleasant to look at. Also they said the interior of the car is sub-par, not the actual car's quality. As long as the mechanical and electrical systems are topnotch, I could care less. If the car is reliable and performs well then thats all that matters. The Altima has so much going for it: style, performance/power, handling, looks, reliability. Out of that, the Camry only has the reliability. Just cause the interior doesn't have proper stitching it doesn't take away from the car's appeal. The new Camry has a boring interior, I'd rather have the Altima's interior than the Camrys. Their's looks so dull and sterile.

Not sure if you are replying to my post.

Ok I forgot about the paint, which really sucks. It's not so chippy as it is thin. I only have two 'chips' in the paint, but I have tons of small scratches on the hood that you can only see by looking at the hood close up. My '91 Corolla has a better paint job, but that's silver paint so maybe its harder to see scratches.

But apart from that, and the occasional dumb shifts by the tranny, the car is perfectly fine. No rattles or squeaks.

Maybe it's the Canadian Maxima's that are trouble free.

No. Whoever decided to keep a 8+ year old 194 hp engine in the new camry should be handed a pink slip. I mean there is at least a 222hp version of the same damned engine. It should have AT LEAST 230hp.

New camrys suck, they dont even come in stick. The new altimas look okay but they arent exactly good looking cars IMO, neither are current gen maximas but at least they got power to make up for it. As a matter of fact almost all new cars look like ***.
