Autometer shift light
Autometer shift light
wow... that install was a lot harder than i was expecting. i dropped the column, took off everything, and got the gauge cluster out in no time, but actually mounting the light was SO difficult. there is no room to work with large screwdrivers, so basically i put the screws in from the inside and have the nuts tightened on the top (outside.) it looks pretty good.
this is my real ? though, when i was testing it i had the 3000 pill in. i held rpm's at 3000, and the light came on. cool. so i put in the 6200 pill and go for a cruise. the light doesn't turn on until 6500? what's up with this? is the light actually turning on at 6200, meaning the factory tach is ~300 rpms high? i don't think that is the problem, cause the fuel cut still bangs at around 6800, on the tach. i'm leaving for work right now so i will bring the other pills with me. i'm interested in seeing when the 6000 pill will kick the light.
if anyone has had similar problems, plz. comment
thanks

i posted that on clubmaxima like 2 or 3 days ago, only 4 views, laugh. so ill post it to the king board. i got the 6000 pill in, and it kicks in at about 6400, so that will work...gives me a second to bring it just over redline then shift. hella bright at night, too. last night i saw a camry (intake, exhaust, wheels, lowered, ??) in the left lane so i pulled up next to him on the right, stuffed it in 3rd at like 80 and brought the revs up to redline so he saw the light...then we both punched it
by the middle of 4th i had him so i let off, pretty easy.

from what I've read about other shift lights with the pills, the only thing that's actually in there is a simple resistor (which costs about 10 cents each at Radio Shack), I found a webpage for the MSD unit that tells teh value of the resistor you need and how to change them for each desired RPM value
you could probably test the resistance on your pill and see if it matches up to the chart or is close so you could experiment with other values if your pills are made the same way instead of having to buy new ones

hope this helps

This is one of the reasons why ET/traps differ so much
Thats nothing when I installed my shiftlight in the SE-R. It is set for 7000rpm but doesn't light up till 7500-7600rpm. I was wondering why my car was only running 15.8-16.0s at 86mph with decent 2.3x 60fts. Once I got the shift light and bumped the timing to 19*, I ran 15.6-15.7s all day long at 87mph. Just think if your tach is off 300rpm, you wouldn't be the meat of the powerband at all times.

I've got the "Harlan" shiftlight and it's set at 6200rpms. At the track, I wind out 1st to redline (the light comes on at 6500 because it winds up to fast), 2nd I take it to the light, 3rd to 6100 (right before the light). From what I've experienced, the tach is off by 200-400rpms depending on the gear you're in (ie the lower the gear, the more it's off).

I have that same shift light too. I can honestly say that I was impressed with the shiftlight. Hell for $35 it can't be beat (assuming it is still the same amount now as last year).
