Exhausts & Low end power
Exhausts & Low end power
I'm about to get a Greddy SP exhaust without the catback. Does anyone know if this will decrease any low-end power ? I heard it won't, but it seems that without that extra back-pressure it will. Can someone help me out ?

man craig
you really worried about your purchase huh, you posting everywhere haha, well you won't really lose hp, but with the stock b pipe, its more restrictive and you won't get as much hp, as with the whole catback setup before the stock pipe has more crimps and bends.

Yea dude I always get paranoid when it comes to my car. This is a significant mod for me ! I already have a lil' low end power taken away from me from my popcharger
and I LOVE low end power...
B/C Greddy will give me something your fart wont. A NICE DEEP grumble. Next will be some performance mods that arent so loud. I wanted both the grumble and the go. Which one I chose first was up to me, and I obviously made my decision...
I was nervous about buying a exhaust system mainly about the noise and volume. But I did it and it sounds great. There might be a slight hp increase but not much without an intake.
Sound with out a y-pipe is pleasant and aggressive.

The way I see it
I think the largest gain is from the Y-pipe, then the B-pipe. These two pipes really open up the exhaust piping volume while keeping the exhaust flow smooth. The free flowing muffler with the two pipes should cause a decrease in backpressure and low-end power; although the mid to high end should improve. If you have just a stock exhaust system and change the muffler, there really shouldn't be much gained or lost.
If anyone wants to let me borrow a direct bolt-on free-flowing muffler for the next Stillen event I'll dyno. I have a 4th gen muffler sitting in my garage, a 5th gen muffler on the car now, and a Stillen rear section exhaust would be fun to try. I think you get three runs for $40 or something. Then finally this debate will be over.

I went with the 5th gen muffler to maintain the low end backpressure while attempting to gain on the mid-top end. I think it's like I stated before, when you free up the exhaust piping you are reducing backpressure and on the low end, backpressure creates torque (power). I think mods for the low end would be the 5th gen muffler, underdrive pulley (should gain all along the powerband), lightened flywheel (same as underdrive pulley...neither create power, but will get more power to the ground), Wilwood brake upgrade (lightens the caliper and rotor mass in half...lighter wheels for that matter).
But I guess in the broad picture when I planned to mod my Maxima long ago, I planned the mods to gain in my driving range. An S/C would not do too much for me, as I desire a reliable and fuel economical car...besides which I shift below the 4,000 RPM under normal driving conditions.
If the concern over low end power loss is so important, think about all the times you drive in the below 2,000 RPM. It's very rare, when I shift at 2,750 in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear, the RPM's will be at 2,000 in the next gear. I guess it's not a big deal for most people, but that's where I drive so I made sure to get my gains around there.

Re: GEEZ
2 mods increase lowend torque, the UDP and ECU. Both don't make any more noise than stock (if that matters). Also an automagic needs a higher stall TC for more lowend torque. For that matter get 2 extra 15in wheels wrapped with some 205-50-15's. The automagic's will accelerate like they have a 4.0 final gear and the 5spds a 4.22 final gear. According to cartest it barely doesn't anything to the 5spd but the auto drops 0-60 by 1 tenth and 1/4 by 2 tenths.

ya, i take that back. i rode in neel's car. it sounded stock. and it was a catback (greddy).
I bought the HKS dual tip muffler for my 2000 ... no loss in low-end ... actually I think the rpms move up a lot quicker .. but I could just b thinking that ...
the growl is amazing!!! I wasn't expecting much .. just wanted 2 get that nice growl which gets stares from everyone! I'm louder than most stangs now

That's more like it. You know you loved that nice deep girgle that is trademark with Greddy.
