Is it worth it to have a beater car?

I know some people drive beater cars to work/school/mall whatever. What are your feelings about a 2nd beater car? To me its a good backup for when the primary goes down, but whats the point of having a beater car if you're not enjoying the primary pimp car? Not to mention, its another vehicle to insure, to fuel, maintain, etc...

I would put money into mods instead of a 2nd car.

according to kbb, my beater has no value...it gets me from point A to B. When it dies, that's it. It comes in handy.

Beaters are OK

My beater is an 85 S10 Blazer with the roof cut off. It has a soft top that leaks like a ****. Its inspection has been expired since July. It has 190,000. The tint is worth more than the car (and it only has 2 windows), so I am trying to sell it with the tint on. It gets alot of advertisement from my driveway, NOT. First $1000 takes it, interested?

i saw an 85 caddy for sale for $800 bucks. man i kick myself in the pants for not pickin it up. Id rather use my I30 for amusement than for the daily grind. it puts so many miles on it...plus dont you ever get that urge to go do some donuts or jump curbs, spin out in peoples lawns, ya know you cant do that in a luxury-sport sedan. thats when you break out the beater. if someone would sell me like a 91 corolla for like $300 i would take it...

Beater cars rule, I drive my 95 GXE to work at least 3 days a week when I am working from the office and I use my max for when I am working on the road. I like my beater because if I don't want to throw my bags and wrappers away, I just toss them in the back seat, I don't vacuum it, I don't wash it, I barely maintenance it, drop hot ashes on the seats..so what, hit a curb and loose a hubcap..who cares.
And when my beater dies the max will be its replacement. I never have a trade-in when I go to buy a new car.

a beater is really nice when you

a) are working on/moding your car and don't have time to finish before you need to go somewhere

b) are working on/moding your car and have to go pick up that part/tool/whatever you don't have to finish the job.

c) your main ride breaks unexpectedly, and you don't want to pay to tow it to a shop and have someone else fix it. ie, you have time to fix it yourself.

if you live where cars get rusty, and plan on keeping a nice car for more than a few years, a beater is a must cuz your nice car will go to hell in a hurry during the winter.

in a nicer climate, i recommend a motorcycle as a beater

I could really use a little pickup but in NJ, the insurance would offset any benefits.

yeah, i've got an old 76 toyota pu, and use it maybe once a month or so. costs me $30/month in insurance for the privledge. i've thought about getting rid of it cuz home depot will rent you a trunk for ~$20, but it's nice to have one around for the convenience. plus, my ins company will let me suspend the coverage on it indefinately. if i go 30 days without using it, i don't pay insurance on it. might want to see if your ins company will do that.

I have mixed feelings. My beater car is a 94 Explorer and i have to admit its nice having an extra car. Just beat the poo out of it. No wash(ever),just maintenance to keep it going. I have so much crap in there its ridiculous i.e. hockey equipment(including the net),snowboarding stuff. I just hate to pay for it but most of the time i think its worth it.

i want to get some kind of lil 4WD pickup as a beater, just to have if i need to haul something, or mainly so me and my dad can take his boat to lakes that he cant get in and out of with his 2WD truck... only thing is, id rather put money into modding my max right now, rather than buying another vehicle and adding it on my insurance and all... so the beater truck will have to wait...

if you ever get into an accidend or decide to get your max worked on or painted then a beater will more than pay for itself

I want to get me a beater....

In NYC, there are many places you rather not park your max if you really love it because it has a good chance of being vandalized, stripped ot stolen. I want a stick shift beater that will last for some time, which I can drive hard and not give a damn if it breaks down in a year. You have less worries with a beater car, park it anywhere, put regular gas in it, don't wash it. I rather put miles on the beater then my max, like when you go out somewhere or need to commute to work. If the car costs me 400$ I'll take it and put snow tires on it and use it in the winter instead of using the max, it will pay off.

We have a beater in the family, my dad drives an 87 Mercury Sable, the car has never seen a car wash, last time it was vacuumed inside was probably 2 years ago. It takes a lot of abuse, it's basically our "truck" to haul junk around in. Car has 130k miles and never really gave us any problems. amazing... I think when my dad will be buying a new car, I'll take the Sable from him and keep it. It's comfortable and roomy inside, although it looks like ****...

Another vote for beater cars!

I've got a 95 Max SE (*drool*), and a 91 Escort Pony (no A/C, no power steering, gets me close to 40mpg on 87).

IMO, beaters are nice coz:
1) Excellent for those 10 minute warm ups during winter where you're burning cheap'er' 87 gas, rather than 91+ in a Max.
2) You won't feel the pinch if someone steals your beater while its warming up in the parking lot (even if you have duplicate keys and lock the door while the engine is warming up, it'll take only a few seconds for someone to open your door). But if someone steals your Max .......
2) Salt on the road will stay away from my Max, so you don't have to wash it as much during winter.
3) When your Max is in the shop, or undergoing mods
4) For those short, 3 minute trips to the store that ain't very good on my Max coz of moisture build up ... but it is a good excuse to take your Max out more often on unnecessary long trips!
5) Multi-car discount!!!!!!!!!!! In my case, my beater is the primary vehicle with PLPD (liability) coverage, while Max is the secondary vehicle with full coverage. When you're 22 like me, they can charge your age on only one car, i.e., the primary vehicle with ultra-cheapo coverage. So your Max enjoys full coverage without the hefty young driver premiums!!!
6) Door dings in the parking lot of Walmart!

What else???

If you can afford it, it's nice to have options...but choose wisely.

if I was getting a beater i would get a 2wd or 4wd pick up truck, just because you can haul so much $hit in it. plus, in the winter, especially in New England, the cars get into accidents often enough that you have a good chance for the max to be hit. plus ,I want to get a motorcycle, and it would be very convenient to just put the bike on the truckbed and go where you need to go. and whe you get to where you wanted to be, get on the bike and do some burnouts

I would love to get a beater, but I have to save the money to get a condo. I wanted to get a 90 Dodge Ram Charger. Something nice and big for all the dumbass people who don't know how to drive and might rear end you. Last month I missed out on a great deal on a 91 Range Rover for $1500

I was thinking of making my 98 max a beater

The way I see it, it's paid for, there's no trade-in value, I've taken good care of it since it was brand new, why not keep it? It frees me up to buy a nice car and not have to subject it to abuse. Let's face it, anything but a Nissan and you have to pay big $ for the car. 6k discounts off list are only in the Nissan world.

Case-in-point: I left my 98 SE parked on Varick St in Manhattan, from Midnight Saturday through monday morn, and nobody bothered it. All the WTC gawkers, Holland Tunnel westbound traffic, and nobody touched it. As a matter of fact it's spent it's life on the streets and never been broken into or vandalised. The Maxima is such a bland car that is able to blend in, attracts zero attention. Maybe it's diff if you 18" it, but that's not a wise investment imho. So the Maxima makes a very respectable beater if you ask me. Drive it everyday, it's economical and was very cheap to buy in the first place. Then you get a S2000 which is reasonably priced and drive it on weekends and outside of the City.
