From today's Motorweek on MPT...

BTW- They tested the Altima on the same track from 2001 Maxus.

The Altima SE 5 speed was reviewed. They really liked it. Impressive track stats. 0-60 in 5.9 seconds, 1/4 in 14.4 @ 100 MPH! This car runs. In the November R & T they ran slightly lower, 6.3 0-60, 14.8 @ 96.5. That was a mini review... probably not on a track.

I'm sure the 2002 Maxima has similar figures.

So they ran it @ teh 75-80 track huh?

Well that would explain teh slow time with a high trap speed. I had the same prob @ 75-80 till i came back to E-town to proive those figures wrong (which it did).

With a 100mph (on NA cars), it should at least be a 14.0-13.9. THose are some fast numbers.

That's just about as fast as the RSX type S. Niceee... A VQ 5spd would need nearly every bolt on mod to run that well Imagine the Alty with bolt ons.. Low 13s N/A? hehehheheh,

No, that's the new 3.5 VQ.

Everyone who ran at Maxus knows that 75-80 is a slow track too. 14.4 is without slipping the clutch or beating on it. Larry J got 14.38 out of his lightly modded 2000 SE 5 speed. I wonder what he could do with this new Nissan crop.

hmmm
have to admit, that makes a person drool. Is it the fastest Nissan to date? What did the 300ZX twin do?

Any chance Nissan will improve the interior for 2003 and maybe do the 6-spd for Altima? I doubt the Max can do these numbers because 15 hp has to carry more weight I think.

Did they state whether the times were corrected? If not, the times posted were of no significant value.

alll magazine times are corrected and they still are of value. if all times are corrected it lets you know where you stand in a perfect world and against all other cars.

Those are some damn good #'s! It looks like the Altima did the exact oppisite of what the Q45 was supposed to do. Meaning that, hte Q was suppose to run 0-60= 5.9 but in most of the test it could not beat 6.5, the Altima did just oppisite, Nissan claimed 0-60=6.5 and it did 5.9! .

BTW thanks for the great info

LOL!!!

Again, us Canadian have different numbers:

2002 Altima SE 5 speed = 3,191
2002 Maxima SE 6 speed = 3,221

A difference of: 30 lb.

Let's see: Max has HLSD, 6 speed AND 15hp more.
Yep. I think it will be faster

Numbers where taken from www.Nissan.ca

I read a very nice write up about it in the new Road & Track. It does beat quite a few quality cars and has a higher trap speed than the new turbo subaru!

I posted a few review of the 5spd 3.5L last week. It is fast for sure! I did a few clutch drops at 4K and it hooked up pretty nice...no wheel hop. I drove her hard for 30mins and put her away wet! The only reason I would say the new 6spd would be slower to 60 is that wheel hop that plagues the 5th gens. Unless they upgraded the engine mounts it is pain to launch a 5th gen fast and consistantly. I wouldn't expect the Max to be any faster at all! I hate to say it but possibly a little slower...to 60 at least. I myself wouldn't buy the Altima since the interior reminds me of Japanese version of a GTP...cheap, ugly and unrefined. If the Max hooks up like the Altima then WOW it is going to be one quick machine and that is without mods. I can't imagine how fast a 6spd is going to be with a few mods and rice juice! Like whoa!

I'm pretty sure those are corrected numbers and those northeastern tracks are the quickest in the nation, BUT if these cars are capable of 14.4s@100mph under good conditions, I am seriously gonna consider one next spring/summer. I love the new Altima inside and out. I was seriously considering a WRX, but if the Altima is gonna be posting these kind of numbers in a comfy and incredible looking sedan with the potential of 13s with very few mods, I'm sold.

Maybe it's different with 5th gens, but both of my 4th gens do not hop off the line at all. When I first got my max it whould hop sometimes but I just learned how to launch it better and now it never EVER hops.

I don't think Motorweek corrects their times. Motorweek tends to have decent times. They recently tested the new Toyota Camry and got 16.2, while another magazine had 16.5. They only got 8.0 and 16.1 out of the 2000 automatic Maxima though. Like I said earlier, 75-80 Dragway (where this test occured) is a slow track. I'll verify with MPT next week about their testing method. I do not believe they use correction.

During the test, they did smoked up the tires during the launch. Also, I did not notice any wheel hop. Looked like it came off the line like a beast.

Also keep in mind that the track it was tested at is on a slight uphill.

The Altima should be hitting 14.0 in the 1/4 stock.

I have a feeling I should be saying bye now before she reads this and kills you

emax: you didn't make it to my list because we've never crossed paths yet... maybe you'll be at this next meet, either way you should get an award for most money spent on mods that were removed.
