Re: Whatever language you choose, you
I believe most schools offer their DS class with C++. So, you should master the basics of C++ first.
I have encountered many DS students before. Most of them think the class is hard. Well, the class is fairly simple IMO. What make them think so is the language itself.

I would like to know what is better to learn, Java , C/C++, or visual basic. They are classes for these and I am curious which is best.

C if you want to be a Unix kernel hacker or don't care for doing object-oriented stuff
Java for e-commerce and front-ends
Visual Basic if you want to monkey with Microsoft software the rest of your life
C++ for just about everything else
Perl for anything and everything (the "swiss army chainsaw" of programming langauges)
Seriously, though, you need Java or C++ with the appropriate object-oriented and data structures background. In today's climate as I see it, Visual Basic and C are becoming lesser used for more specific tasks. Java and C++ seem to be the languages of choice for bigger projects.
What school are you going, too, BTW?
