Very Good Y-Pipe Questions
I just need to know how it will effect my emissions. Will it set off the Engine Check Light? Has anyone failed inspection because of using it?
Also my car is a Cali Spec, will this make any difference?
I just need the facts.
Thanks.

You should be ok. The main purpose of the cats in the OEM y-pipe is to cut startup emissions. They are closer to the exhaust ports, so they will heat up and "light off" sooner. The main cat should be able to keep you clean after it warms up. Drive around for at least 45 minute before you go, to make sure it is good and hot.
However, if the look under your car to make sure you have all your cats, there may be a problem.
Then again, I don't have a y-pipe, so this is all just a guess....

Many people have passed emmissions without a problem. Generally, make sure the car is warm bofore going, if your really worried do an oil change before that 30 minute drive.
In NY I have found that if you don't go to Nissan, and have the inspection done at a local mechanic (don't know if Mass has the same setup)they don't really know the pre -cats are missing
My $.02

Does anybody know if the same thing applies to a 92 Maxima SE? I am getting a Y-Pipe very soon and I'm also wondering if I will have a problem with inpections or emissions. Thanks.

finally deez your gonna do something to your beast. i passes emmisions fine with a WSP y-pipe and no shop will know you are missing the pre-cats because they don't know nissan's that well. most places think they don't even make performance parts for a maxima. if you get a cali spec pipe you will have no check engine lights or anything. what kind are you gonna get???

Dana, i have a 99 cali spec myself & i am using a Stillen Y-pipe right now.
You will pass emissions w/ it. The Y-pipe for the 4th gne cali models only eliminate 1 precat & not both. The precats are only there for polution control during cold start-ups. Drive the car around for 10 mins and there will be no difference in emissions at all.
No, you will not get any CEL on from this. As long as your 02 sensors are plugged back in & not damaged, you will be fine.
Also, with the cali spec models, you can run w/o a cat (eg. hollowed out cat or test pipe) and no CEL lights will occur. That is b/c we do not have any 02 sensors in anywhere from the cat all the way back.
I hope this helps.
