Tranny shifting quest. Is this normal?
Can shift points on an auto be adjusted? When I slow down but not stop (like when slowing down for a yield sign or speed bump) then press gas to accelerate the engine will rev but not go anywhere then it will downshift to first gear then accelerate. Shouldn't it have already downshifted when I slow down rather than wait until I press the gas? This is very annoying and doesn't seem right. Any ideas?? thanks
When I come to a complete stop it downshifts to first the way it should.

With the Level 10, it still does it unless you are going less than about 4 MPH.

If you think its bad in our cars try it with an auto 4 cylinder Honda, they are MUCH worse. You can actually feel the clutches slipping in that ar in order to make the shift smooth.

If you do get the VB, get it to extend the life of the auto tranny. It make the shifts a bit firmer, but overall, I'm not impressed. You can also go with a Level Ten rebuilt, then your auto should perform a lot better. For me personally, I'm looking for a 5spd swap instead. Auto just suck ***.

Too bad Nissan didn't use Subaru to gear their automatics. My wife's 98 Legacy GT Wagon has an awesome auto (the car itself isn't fast though). The car always seems to grab the right gear all the time. It never feels like it's lugging.
Check out the gearing on the Legacy auto:
1st 28mph
2nd 55mph
3rd 90mph
4th ~130mph
At 70mph, the rpms are reading a nice 3000 which means the car doesn't feel like it's lugging in too steep a overdrive. If the auto Maxima has this kind of gearing, it would be significantly quicker off the line.

On the 2002 Max auto at least the tach stays at 2700-2800 rpm at 80mph. Just FYI

downshifts
Yea, my wife's 99 is like that. I really wouldn't want it to automatically downshift into 1st at some set speed. My Sequoia does that, and I find it annoying. But what I would like to see out of her Max is downshifting sooner when I start mashing the gas pedal down hard. It seems to take about 2-3 seconds to do so, no matter what speed or gear. I dunno, maybe something is wrong with hers (wifes).
