2001 Vs 2000 Maximas
My neighbor lady just got a 2001 SE and was under the impression she had the big motor.
I thought the 2k1s had 225 hp, versus the 2k with 222 hp.
Am I wrong on this?
By the way she is unhappy with the cabin noise at highway speeds and was thinking of an undercoat.
She had a 3rd gen as did I, so we both think the new cars are a little less quiet. I think the door seals and thinner glass contribute to this.

yes in 1995 Nissan started making Minima's.. cars with rattles, road noise and crappy paint.. she isn't dreaming..
tell her to pop her hood.. if the valve cover says 3.5 she has the big engine.. if it doesn't.. she doesn't..
if she bought the car for less cabin noise.. she should have bought a lexus..

She will be HIGHLY disappointed going from a 3rd gen to a 5th gen. The quality isn't even close.

ALL cars will eventually rattle.....even Toyotas. My buddies 94 Supra TT had quite a few rattles and the same goes for the Celica GT-Ss I've ridden. From what I've seen, Hondas have quite a few rattles especially form hatches, A-pillars, and guage pods. Stop fooling yourselves if you think a couple rattles represent poor worksmenship.

I've driven Russ' 2001 Maxima and it had no rattles and was very quiet. I've riden in Guido's 95 GLE which didn't rattle and the engine and road noise were nearly inaudible even with a Y-pipe and 16s. My car doesn't rattle and I've got Intrax springs, stiff Koni's and KYBs, wide 16s and high performance tires. I rode in BryanH's 92 SE (the infamous NA 14.3 second 3rd gen) and the quality didn't strike me as "top notch". His car rattled over big bumps (like most cars do) and some trim pieces were showing their age.

You know better than to imply that my thoughts go as deep as a couple of rattles. You've said it to me before, I've let it go as your opinion, BLAH BLAH BLAH. I could probably search and find a copy and pasted version as I recall most of these comments.
My experience is from 2 3rd gens, 1 4th gen, and a 2k1 that I rented for an entire week on vacation. Not to be like Russ, but I've had 10 years of Maxima driving experience: 7 years with an 89, 4 years with a 94, over 2 years on a 99, and the mere week with the 2k1.
There's no comparison: the 3rd gen is assembled better from top to bottom. There's just no arguing that.

I guess the answer is yes, but 3rd gens in decent shape are near impossible to find.
To get that kind of quality these days, $40k and up cars would have to be considered.

The list...
I like the fact that the newer maxes look a little more aggressive. But IMO, the 4th gens feel lighter, even "too light". The panels just feel thinner with less durability. The detail of the design of the 3rd gens seem to have been very thought out and everything has a sporty style. Whereas the 4th gens, the design seem to be very generic and a little too "simple". There are a few things that I noticed between 3rd and 4th gens. The fact that nissan made what used to be standard features on 3rd gens into options on 4th gens showed that the kinda degraded quality. For example, Sunroof and Bose became options on 4th Gen SE's. They removed some luxury lighting effects as well like the rear door lights and the dimming dome light. These are the little features that I like on my 3rd gen. Automatic seatbelts and the power lock/unlock feature that controls all the doors were also degraded. I had also heard that the Anti-Skid feature that was standard on 3rd gens were also dropped. Not to mention the rear independent suspension. I have driven my girlfriend's 4th gen and dont get me wrong, it is a nice car, but my pick would be the 3rd gen. More for the money.
