Would you get rid of your maxima?

EXACTLY.
I'm a car guy. I like cars and driving, so inevitably I'm going to pay whatever gas costs at the time to have my hobby.
I DD my BMW in the summer because it gets slightly better mileage and takes good ol' 87 octane. I still squeak 27-28mpg out of the Maxima and it is a hell of a lot more comfortable...so I may consider getting another car, but it definitely wouldn't be because of gas prices.

my perspective on this is that i average 23mpg, and i was looking at some i-4 engines, and most if any that have decent power.... get worse than my mpg.... so no not getting rid of the max... imho its a great balance b/w power and mpg

What we need is a program for the fuel system to do what the Honda Od-duh-see does and shut down fuel delivery to 3 cylinders when you are at a cruising speed and there by saving fuel. How hard could that type of program be to come up with? Somebody has got to be working on it as an aftermarket system product that can be easily loaded onto car's fuel managment system. I think we could see a fuel savings of around 20%. Thoughts?

I agree with that!!! I love my maxima, I'll drive it till it dies and keep rebuilding till I die!!!

Eventhough my max is already been replaced with a Corolla XRS, which gets about 34 mpg on highway (@70 mph). Sometimes I wish I'd purchase a regular Corolla instead. These things get up to 41-44 mpg on highway, pretty amazing.
Mind you, I put on almost 50K miles a year due to a long commute.

I drove a 4 cyl saturn for the past 8 years... w/ great gas mileage. Just got rid of it a few weeks ago and bought an 08 maxima. Sure... doesn't get nearly the same gas mileage... but it it SO MUCH more fun to drive. Best decision I've made in awhile. I love it.

i actually was thinking about this the other day, since my financial situation is dire (read: broke college student) i wanted something more fuel efficient, but truthfully even the cars that are similar in price that get better gas mileage, don't get much better gas milage, and sacrifice ALOT of luxury and enjoyment that my I30 brings me. i will most likely sell it eventually when i'm more financially independent and stable but it will not be for fuel efficiency

But no i wont get rid of it, ill just drive my gf's accord more often.

Considering my other vehicle is a Nissan Xterra that gets 15 mpg, I'm thinking that the Maxima will stay for a very, very, very long time....however i am trying to unload the Xterra in hopes of buying a new 2.5 altima

I mean don't get me wrong, y'all...
I used to own a 1997 Maxima GLE that I bought in '99. It was a great car, and I loved it to death. I did all my own maintenance and a few minor mods. I thought it was an engineering marvel, and I still think that the Nissan VQ is the best V6 on the market and has been since its introduction. It was by far the best car that I had owned to that point. I kept it detailed and running like a top at all times. I considered selling it to buy something different, but because of the resale value it didn't seem worth it.
After it got totaled and I had to buy another car I missed it, but I wished that I had done it sooner.

If I were to drive something like a civic and get 5mpg more than what i'm getting now, I would save approximately $350/year, driving 10,000 miles.
Why would a person want to do that? especially since the price of fuel-efficent vehicles are way over priced right now. For the same price as my maxima, I probably could have gotten a similair year civic with no power, no leather, no style. I would rather have a Maxima and actually enjoy drivng.

I've had my 95 GLE since she was new. She turned over 175K last week and keeps going strong. I don't spend much at all on repairs, and insurance is cheap at this point. So pretty much my only cost of driving is the gas.
I kind of want a new car, just because I WANT one, but it isn't for fuel economy reasons. I'm looking at the Infiniti G35. I think the 2009 Max looks nice, but I really want to buy Japanese again.

Yes, someday I will sell her. First I have to come to terms with losing all of the money I sunk into her. I want to go back to a classic muscle car or a street rod.
The real question isn't will you sell your Maxima (because we all will eventually), but will you buy anther one?

I've looked at just about everything to try and replace the Altima. If I wanted something faster, MPG would be in the drain. If I wanted MPG, the speed would be in-existent. If I wanted comfort then I would sacrifice price. Really, the ONE car that I would replace my Altima with is a 5.5 gen 6spd. But those are pretty rare with decent mileage (under 75k)
So far now.. I'll live with my rattles and engine hesitations and just keep on filling up.

eventually I'll get something new/different but as of right now I sort of lost my interest in cars, I love cars but just realized there is more to what I'm driving, between school/books, living expense, the girl/s, and smaller payments leading to eventually no payments, I can't wait, I'm gonna be 29 and have never had a car payment of less then 500 bucks in 12 years, and total monthly vehicle expense has been an average of $1000, so I just can't wait to have no payment so mods can be done without thinking as well as other things.
I love my 6th gen and it brings me so much joy from driving, I'm emotionally attached to this car and can't let it go, this is the only chick in my life that lets me control her
