cvt sucks
09 maxima owner
Hey guys ways just surfing the web and found this forum so I figured I'd drop my 2 cents. So I have an 09 maxima I bought it used a while back. I now, have over 177k on it. The darn thing still runs great. No problems with cvt at all shifts perfect. The only thing I can really say about it is from a dig it sucks. At times this thing wants to hop up n go other times it just slumps around. I've figured that it really gets up to speed once your doing about 35. As with fluids I do my own oil changes, every 5k with full syn. Now with the Tran fluid I don't know if it has ever been flushed. Before I bought it there was about 145k (great deal couldn't pass it). I will say I have had it checked out and there wasn't a single problem with it. now that I hear it could mess my cvt up my flushing it I'm kinda sceptical. About it. If someone could please explain how putting new trans fluids in it could set me back 4 grand it would be greatly appreciated
My wife has '12 Nissan Rogue and I HATE driving that thing. I know that its not for hard driving, but the CVT holds that thing back so much, you couldn't pass a moped on the highway. Sure it's great on gas, but you use all that gas up trying to merge on the highway. The engine is sooooo loud because it just doesn't want to move. She loves it, but I hate driving that thing. They need to get rid of this cvt crap. The newer Max's may compensate from the larger engine, but like the Rogue, I'm sure the CVT holds back these Maxima's a lot. More then people think.
I did 2 drain fill sequences with 07 Maxima and Amsoil CVT Fluid. I sent a sample to Blackstone and fluid came back good. This was my moms car and we have had it in the family since new in 07. 95k and the CVT (so far) while boring to drive, functions flawless.
Another 100k and I will know for sure about this CVT but the CVT systems will not be going anywhere anytime soon. Nissan, Toyota, Lexus, etc... I'd rather this CVT than have to put faith in a 8 speed auto in a Jeep

That ZF 8HP transmission may be the most reliable part in the Jeep. Chrysler is building their own licensed version licensed from ZF.
Variants of the ZF 8HP are being used by Audi, Bentley, BMW, Chrysler, Dodge, Iveco, Jaguar, Jeep, Lancia, Land Rover, Maserati, Ram Trucks, Rolls-Royce and Volkswagen.

Many Nissans from 2003-2014 were using the RE0F09A or RE0F09B which i can't find ratios for. I checked half a dozen ESMs on different vehicles and the ratios were not listed. This older version had a more narrow range.
I also wish we could get a full manual CVT control. Maybe something that works like the hydrostat control on my lawn mower. Just have a normal looking manual shifter that you just slowly slide backward to up shift and you slide forward to up shift.
I was a huge fan of manual transmissions - still am. Love rowing my own gears and can't stand automatics shifting when you don't want them to. So I was hesitant to pull the trigger on a 7th gen max. But i test drove a couple and really liked it. In D mode it takes off pretty strong (tc kicks in and other computer controls). But from about 20mph on it pulls amazingly - i actually love that the CVT never changes a gear. It just gets with the program and feels like your riding a rocket or something. Love it.
It has some hiccups - if you take off slowly mine drops speed and then picks back up which is annoying, not sure if that is an issue with my car or a common problem. THe Ds mode which mimics shifting is okay. IN Ds with the paddles or bumping the stick it gets more fun, though the computer doesn't realy let you control it completely - sometimes it shifts before I wanted it to when getting high in the revs. But just plain old D is the most fun. So call me a convert of a type....or maybe headed that way.
Oh and in traffic - this is way better than my 4th gen with the stick
