Sponsorship
It ain't easy. It's honestly easier to find friends who can hook you up with parts. I've got like 7-8 sponsors, and it wouldn't be worth it if it was just a hobby. I go to a lot of shows to promote my business, so it's not too hard for me to meet the sponsorship requirements. But for most people, it's tough. You have to go to a lot of shows, put a lot of your own money into the car, and just be really dedicated. Plus when you get sponsored, you get locked into a lot of contracts. If you violate the sponsorship agreement, they can bill you for the full retail price of the product if you want. And you have to check in with the company on a constant basis to let them know what's going on.
I think I had about $10K into the car before I got my first sponsor. Now there's something like $21K of mods on the car, and I still get turned down once in a while. It's a viscous cycle. To get sponsors, you need to dump a lot of money into your car. But if you don't have sponsors, you can't afford a lot of the work needed to get sponsors. I will say one thing though. The more sponsors I have, and the more work in the car, the easier and better the deals get. I get a lot more free stuff than I did at first. It's hard at first, but it gets easier.
