I have a question for new car buyers. Please help.
Hello people. I went to Nissan of Manhattan yesterday to check out the new max. After I test drove the car and I sat down talking about prices with the salesman. Everything goes fine until I ask him for a copy of a price quote. He offers me $27000 for a base S version. Then I said okay, please give me a formal copy of the price quote so I can show to other dealers for them to beat it. He said I need to pay $500 refundable deposit. He told me all dealers will charge this fee. Of course I didn't pay and just walk out. I want to know is this normal to pay a fee just for a price quote? Any suggestions welcome. Thanks!
Uh....well, they ARE trying to sell cars, you know.
Why would he want to give the OP a price "for other dealers to beat"?
Anyhoo, as long as it clearly states refundable, what's the issue?

never buy any car in manhattan.
you will surely get ripped.
never talk price in person.
go to 4 or 5 dealers & take their cards.
talk price over the phone & tell them to call you back when they have your price.
you are in charge.
also go on the offical nissan web site to check out the just in time updated inventory of every dealer.
why even talk price when they don't have the car you want? sure they can "get it" from another dealer but they'll put miles on it driving it to their dealer. why buy a "driven" car?
I would try to get 500 below cost as a price
good luck!

Never pay a dime for a quote. YOU are the customer, and YOU should be in control. They are there to serve you. They have to try to sell you the car. THEY have to please YOU.
The 'S' is selling for between #24K and $26K in Atlanta (a few dealers sometimes go below $24K). I realize overhead is higher in NY, and whereas there are 23 Nissan dealers within 90 minutes of my home, you may have a smaller choice of dealers in NY. But I would still urge you to get down to $26K or go elsewhere.
