Separating Ball Joints

It seems I can never do this correctly. If I move the boot far enough to clear the separation tool, most of the grease gets squeezed out. If don't push the boot down as far, the tool tears it. Either way I loose because the joints on our cars do not have grease fittings. Does anyone here have a successful method for separating them?

Thank you.
