I am tempted to get a muffler/exhaust but I enjoy the "sleeper" effect of having a factory quiet muffler.

 

I have y-pipe and rt cat with stock muffler. I will get a b-pipe later, but will probably stick with the stock muffler.

 

I am thinking about putting just the factory muffler back on (leaving the WSP y-pipe and CAI, and the Courtesy B-pipe).

 

but my stock cat back is rusty, and has many miles. I think I'm gonna try the Apex WS. Or I might just get a courtesy B pipe and play around with a few different universal mufflers.

 

I have th CAI, Y, RT and all the rest is stock. I get the sleeper effect until WOT, then the CAI announces itself
Also, on a more subtle note, once I got the Y, about a year after the CAI, I could hear a change in my muffler. When parked and in a cold idle (like 1100 rpm) when I stand right next to the muffler, I can hear that the muffler is doing its very best to contain the noise of the Y. Before, the exhaust was flowing out smoothly, now its a little more furious, but still subdued.

I may get the B-pipe later. I hear that The Y with a B or aftermarket muffler REALLY gets noisy.

My current setup is a Stillen Y-pipe, Stillen B-pipe, intake, UDP, stock muffler. My Max is quite a bit louder than stock, but it's not ricey and doesn't sport the "hey look at me" noise. I use to have a Courtesy B-pipe and it was a little quieter simply because the Courtesy has a small resonator and the Stillen B-pipe doesn't. I also use to have a HKS muffler along with the Courtesy B-pie and Y-pipe and it was loud!!! Not really ricey sounding, but the resonating from 2200-2600 was very annoying. I don't think it's right for a sedan like this to sound loud. I took off the muffler and put the stocker back on. At the track, my car was no slower with the stock muffler.

BTW, I have stillen intake, cattman ypipe, rt cat, courtesy b-pipe, stock muffler, ractive exhaust tip.

Y-pipe muffles some noise at idle. B-pipe noise is hardly noticable. Kept the stock muffler b/c I wanted the car to minimize my exhaust noise. If you want performance however, catback is the way to go. *Hint hint* my custom stainless b-pipe goes on sale next Spring

I agree with you that most aftermarket mufflers are noisy in my opinion. Just listen to those ricey Honduhs

 

I have a generic cone intake, Stillen 2-piece Y-pipe, RT Cat, Courtesy B-pipe, and 5th gen muffler on my 97 Maxima. The intake by far is the loudest relative to the stock component. The Y-pipe added a nice deep growl shortly after cranking. Adding the B-pipe and 5th gen muffler added a very little noise, but deepened the tone at lower RPMs (1,000-2,000 RPM...and sounds cool when gear coasting) The RT Cat actually made my Y-pipe a little quieter. With this setup from the interior, my car is far quieter than my brother's stock 95 M3. I did a bit of sound deadening and now the car is quieter than stock with a nice exhaust tone. I would definitely keep the stock muffler on the car...even the Apex'i WS gets a bit loud for me.

 

I have Y-pipe, hollowed out cat, stock B & muffler.

I plan on replacing teh B-pipe very soon. I am leaving stock muffler on for sleeper. Changing the muffler will yield 1-2hp tops. If your boosted or NOSed, then i would replace teh stick muffler. I am willing to take the blow of having 1-2hp less and having sleeper look. I dont like meatball shooters and i dont like teh attention either (police that it...). My exhaust has a slight note from the y-pipe but the cat sounds really funny. I guess im not use to that hollowed out sound yet.

 

I have a cattman Y and stillen SS muffler. Its already pretty damn loud as it is so im not so shure about getting b-pipes. When I just had the stillen muffler it was only lous at mid range rpms but now with a y-pipe, it made it lous at all rpms especially the lower range.
