Guy with older Legend LS AUTOMATIC wants to race me for $$$
So I was at Friday's last night after MAX2000JP and I put the smackdown on a few cars...including a BMW 740i from a roll.
Jason (MAX2000JP) is talking to one of his buddies that has a dodge dakota and this other guy who has a 92-94 legend LS automatic. The guy in the Legend says he'll challenge any maxima to a race becuase his car can "supposedly" go 160mph...BONE STOCK. Jason and I look at each other and just roll our eyes. The guy wants to do it for 100 bucks. The only thing is...he wants to do it from a roll at 60-70mph from one interstate exit to another (approx. 2-3 miles) and threre are "no rules"....personally I KNOW that Legend can't go 160...and if anyone had evidence to say it does...please share with me...the thing only has 200hp...I'm just weary of racing flat out on the interstate for 2-3miles at over 140mph...not safe in my book...but I really want to put this guy in his place...he says that all maximas are limited at 120mph

The benchmark time I read for a 2nd gen. Legend was C&D's first full test with 0.60mph in 7.3 seconds backed up with a 7.4 second run in a later test. Those cars were geared and shift-programmed to take advantage of every bit that motor put out. The 5th gen. 3.0L Maximas (especially automatic) don't use anywhere near the potential of its motor output curve because the allowable shiftpoints are not high enough. Best top speed I read on an automatic Legend I think was 135 mph (not 160!!!) and the best for an automatic 3.0L 2000 Maxima was 131 mph done by Road&Track. Best bet is to do a highway roll-on. If you have a 5th gen. 3.0L automatic, you guys should pull evenly, provided his car has a healthy motor (it's old!). And if he's too cocky, bring that guy over here in Silver Spring, MD where he can take on my dad's Bonneville SE (with the supercharged engine). Given that it has put out at least half-dozen 14.5s at 93-94+mph (corresponds to 0-60mph accel. in the high 5s), he'll never know what hit him.

In coupe form in 93 it came with the 230hp engine bolted to a 6spd was rated at 143mph topspeed and 0-60 at 6.3 seconds. To attain 6.3 seconds you would need to dump the cluth at like 5k RPM. The average driver would attain probably 6.6 - 6.7.
The reason he wants to race a high-end race is because Legends have nothing from a stop, stock at least. Especially an auto. but 40+mph be carefull. I've modified my car and i've beaten last gen M3's, a current gen S4 and gave a current gen 540i 6spd a run for it's money and heard of guys beating M3's almost stock at the high-end. I also gave a current gen M3 a run but I think he was just slapping me around

Okay, I own a legend and have raced many a max boys. We do it for fun, not money. But it depends what kind of max do you have and what kind of mods? Same with the Legend. But stock for stock, at high end, it will be pretty damn close because the Legends have very good high end. Also I have a 94 Coupe 6 speed. Top speed is at 147, but that is for a TYPE II 6 speed.Plus I have I/E. But is it worth the 100, bucks, maybe not, because it is dangerous also it will be very close, not a guarantee win.

guys...I already know there is no way that he can hang with me...I have a '97 SE 5-speed with ALL the bolt-ons and a 50shot of NOS. He admitted that I'd kill him from a standstill but he was saying that he would win a top end becuase I'm supposedly "limited" to 120 mph (I've gone 146 on my GPS and I had more) and he claimes a top speed of 160

Briguy, don't race at those speeds on a public interstate. At those speeds you could easily screw up and be killed. Is your life worth $100 ? Also, think about the other people who are obeying the law...
I'm gonna stop becuase i'm sounding like an elder here, but just be careful. I personally would never race at those speeds on a public highway.

I wouldn't do it dude, not for that distance. You know your car will annihilate him, and he is just in denial if he doesn't know too. Offer to race him for $200 from like a 50 mph roll on for like a mile or 3/4 of a mile or something. Scope out the area first so you guys have landmarks for the beginning and end of the race. But 2-3 miles at that speed is just asking for a ticket or someone to be in the way. If he thinks his car is so fast, he should take you up on your offer.

Yeah it makes no sense
A whipping is a whipping, I mean once you have both reached top end it doesn't really matter for how long you sustain it, all the road in the world can't change that. He does sound like a dumbass, telling you what your cars top end is.

January 1993 Road and Track magazine.
"These numbers make this the fastest legend we've ever tested."
They topped out a 6 speed Type II (230HP) Legend at 146MPH. That's a far cry from 160mph. Case Closed.

A good friend of mine had a GS 6 Speed. They have 230 hp and 206 ft-lb stock. He himself admits, knowing how fast my car is, that stock for stock it won't beat me. Top end he estimated at 145... and ta-da... road and track said 146. Looks like thats about right guys. The guy now has an S2000 (wifes car), 91 NSX which was formerly twin turbo'd (I don't know what company the kit was) and is now Comptech SC'd and running 11.8s, and a brand new TL-S with Comptech headers. He knows his stuff, and admits that his GS6 as he called it, would not beat a 5 speed Maxima. His Legend was unmodded. Top speed appears to be a bit higher than the stock maxima, but other than a race above 140mph, the Legend is going to get beaten, stock for stock.

Older legends are pretty fast
i once sat in a guy's legend with 5 people on board, no mods, and this wasnt the 6 speed faster one, mind u. Its pretty fast from 60 all the way to 145mph. My friends were all very surprised that the speedo went arounds its dials so fast and very consistant, no slowing down even it past 100. But if u have a 5th or 4th with mods, im pretty sure u can beat him, but its gonna be close. I really like that car's engine and its clean interior and nice looks. Sort of like what the type-S is now, but better looking.
