My key broke off in the ignition...help!

I was getting out of my car today and started pulling out my key, without force, and half of it broke off in there. I can still put the other half in the ignition and it starts, but I want that piece out! The key is not magnetic and I dont think tweezers will get it either. What do I do? Is there a special tool made for this? thanks

If the key is not "locked" in there, you can try using superglue and a nail/pin/chopstick etc.. Put some superglue on the "stick" and try to get it to stick to the broken key. Wait and then try to pull it out gently.

Well I haven't heard your bright idea? hehe.

Anyway if that happense, you can just use nail polish remover to unstick it. sheesh

Disclaimer:

If you don't have any common sense, don't try my method. hehe

That is nuts. It happened just as you pulled it out normally? Was it ever been or straightened before?

If you can still drive the car, take it to a locksmith's shop. They should have no trouble picking it out, shouldn't cost more than $10-$20, and you can have a new one made while you're there.

solder will not stick on the key like that.

The super glue idea sounded good,

why not put a tad of super glue on the end of the half in your hand, then insert your key, let it stay together and see if that works. I wouldn't use much, just a dab. Or a least call a locksmith for advice.

get two paper clips..straighten them out.
bend the tips at a 45 degree angle.
try to push down on the pins of the lock and dig under the broken key with the two clips and try to pull it out. if it goes it more..just stop.

my $.02

Just get a genuine key from Nissan and have them cut it, how much would that really cost? $40?

I've bent my Nissan key nearly 90 degrees... it didn't break, but it isn't any more resistant to it than a copy. Actually, my copied key for my brother's car is stronger than my Nissan key.
