tinting laws in NJ

I was wondering, anyone who lives in NJ, how dark can you tint your front driver and passenger windows. I was looking around and it seems you arent supposed to have any tint at all on the front windows. If this isnt true, then what is the limit?

From the laws I have read, you can have any % on the back window and rear passenger windows. You can't have anything on the front passenger windows or anything on the windshield.

ANY % of tint on the front windows are illegal in NJ
Rear windows etc.: Up to you

Those cars you see driving around in NJ w/ tint jobs all around are illegal. Depends on which Jersey town you live in.. some are lenient while most Jersey towns will issue you a summons with no hesitation.

Yes, my brother in-law told me when he moved from Illinois to NJ, he had to peel off the front window tint to pass the inspection at DMV.

Solution: Leave your front windows rolled down during insepction. They don't bother rolling them up and won't check the tint

I have 20% all around and I have yet to have a problem with the cops. I've owned the car since March 2001 (bought it with the tint). I have inspection in March 2002, don't know what I'm gonna do! Either keep the front windows rolled down or go to a private inspection.

Later,
-Nick

vice versa...percentage is how much light is let through so the higher the number the lighter the tint

Rolling down the front windows usually won't work. I used to have a Jeep Cherokee with 5% in the back and nothing in the front, and everytime I went to inspection they made me roll up my front windows just to check. I have 20% all around in my max, and I'll probably just peel it off the front when I go to inspection and then get it redone.

Break Down...

You can have anything you want on the REAR doors. Paint them black if ya want...

As far as the REAR window goes... If you have a Mirror on your passenger door you can paint that too... No mirror you can't touch it...

Front Doors.... NOTHING at all... no questions asked...

Front windshield... if you look at the top right part you will see some letters or numbers I forget. It’s about 3 inches down from the Top well that is all you can tint paint what ever you want... Anything lower is a No No....

Hope this helps.

Andre S.

Do what I did...
Tint the Front windshield 50%
Tint Both Front doors 50%
Tint Rear doors 35%
Tint Back window 25%

AND...

Registered it in Florida!!!

If you pull into a NJ inspection station with your front windows rolled down and you have tint on your rear windows you can be sure they WILL roll up your front windows.

There not stupid, but you'll look pretty stupid trying to pass that one over on them.

My front tints are fairly light at 50% and the tint film goes up to the very edge, very nicely done. You think they'll let me get away with it if I told them its a factory tint?
