I give in. I don't consider myself a stupid person, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how struts and shocks and **** works. I always thought it was like disc/drum brakes...some cars have 2 disc and 2 drum, some cars have 4 discs...I figured the Maxima had four struts because it had four discs, but then custommaxima sells koni shocks and kyb struts...i'm so confused!
I wish I was more of a car guy...I know brakes ok, I can talk about engines all right, but suspensions come up in a conversation and I feel like a mildly retarded fat mexican girl.
somebody help!
Peace

From what i've read, the KYB's are an entire "shock absorber" assembly. the Koni's are a shock absorber "insert". the Maxima has struts-the entire assembly. the koni's are what are inside the struts. the stock strut's need to be taken apart and mildly gutted in order to insert the koni "shocks". before the KYB's, koni's were the only adjustable form of shock absorption there was, which warranted the extra effort for installing them. I'm not sure how the KYB's stand up to the Koni's in performance however, but i'm sure that's been talked to death/will be somewhere on the .org. good luck in finding the absorber that's right for you, and let me know what you decide, i'm interested in doing the same soon.Originally posted by guitaraus

So if i'm understanding you right, all cars have struts AND shocks, the shocks being INSIDE the struts, right?Originally posted by Xtreme5053

I'm not debating what to buy...I'm incredibly poor right now, I was just curious. I've always wondered, not necessarily about aftermarket struts and shocks, just struts and shocks in general. I wish I could afford any real mods...someday...Originally posted by LucentAUTO

No. A strut is a type of shock absorbor. Go to www.howstuffworks.com and you will find all the answers to your questions there. All cars DO NOT have struts AND shocks, like LucentAUTO just said. Maximas have 4 struts (which contains the shock absorber). Honda Civics have no struts, only shocks. Its just a difference in design. They both perform the same function.
