I read a thred somewhere that the VQ engine was really meant for the 300ZX, but when they killed the 300ZX in the U.S., Nissan had to put that jewel somewhere to try to re-coup their developments costs? True?

Hmm, the 300ZX was taken out of production AFTER the VQ appeared. I believe the design of the engine was related to Nissan getting into racing, but them they withdrew. The VQ ended up in the Maxima, and the rest is history.

I Thought donating was a humble thing that you don't share with everyone
The VQ was designed for a racing series that was disbanded. So Nissan had a bunch of molds and stuff machined for producing VQs, and nothing to use them for. So they decided to produce them for the Maxima.
