2K2 Maxima Test Drive

2K2 Maxima Test Drive
Went to the local dealer this past week-end to try out the new Altima to replace either my 95 SE or my wife's VW P1ssant. (probably the latter because my car has 150K miles and still is more trouble-free!)
The Altima clutch takes some getting used to but the engine revs very freely. The cloth & plastic interior is horrible but then again there were no 3.5 SE 5 speeds on the lot with a leather interior and my wife refuses to buy an automagic unless it is an SUV or minivan.
Since we were both dis-satisfied with the Altima we test drove a 6 speed Maxima. While the Altima may accelerate quicker from a dead-stop the Max felt just as strong on the highway and definately alot more comfortable and solid especially the clutch feel.
I did ask the salesman about the top-end on the Altima and he replied with "What does the speedo say?" When I told him 160 MPH he said he had driven the Altima at that speed. My wife and I tried not to laugh but we immediately looked at each other and .
Anyway the Max is at the top of our buy list unless a TL-S is soon offered in a 6 speed at a comparable price.

Well as an owner of the 2k2MAX (Auto) and coming from a 99 VW Passat I can tell you, you will thouroughly enjoy the transition. The Transmission is perhaps the smoothest I have every driven, and I would just double check those Acuras if I were you. I have a ton of respect for them but the trannys are F**ked up. THe TL is a beautiful car but IF THEY have half the problem my friend has with his CL-S I would say stay clear.
