The Classic Car Club of America, maintain that 20 years to 45 years old for a car to be a classic (over 45 years fall into the Antique Class).

At 20 or 25 years many states allow a car owner to purchase "Antique Car" license plates that do not require annual license or taxation fees. Some states allow antique status cars to be exempt from emission or state inspection requirements.

I've seen the following breakdown:

20 to 45 years (Classic)
45+ (Antique)

The Antique Automobile Club of America defines an antique car as 45 years old or older. A Classic as 20-45 years old.

A vintage car is commonly defined as a car built between the start of 1919 and the end of 1930 known as the "Vintage era".

Much information is available on Wikipedia..

The Japanese Classic Car club has its own set of rules..

http://www.japaneseclassiccarshow.com

All Pre-85 Japanese cars are eligible including later years for models that were first built in 1985.

such as :

Toyota MR2 AW11,
Toyota Corolla AE86,
Nissan 300ZX /Z31 - (Not Z32 models)
Mitsubishi Starion,
Dodge Colt (MITSUBISHI Gallant!)
Mazda RX-7,
Honda Civic 1st gen, Integra 1st gen....
etc...
If you are not sure about your model manufactured year, please contact JCCS to verify.

i would say first gen would classify as classic in some sence. I have antique plates on my maxima but don't really consider it as a real classic.
