Sticky situation with sold car breaking

So I recently sold my 1997 se 5spd maxima. The guy who bought it was probably early 20's. When we meet the first time they were bouncing it off the rev limiter (before he bought it) then when we meet for him to actually purchase the car he was talkin about takin it to the drag strip and racing the car.

Now when I sold him the car there was NOTHING wrong mechanically. But last night, the clutch went out after 2 days of him having the car... I have had 3 freinds drive the car in the last 2 weeks and none of them noticed any slipping or anything of the sort. IMO this is not my problem, Right? my guess is he hotrodded it and blew out the clutch. I offered to pull some strings and try to get him a clutch at cost but he will have to cover the cost. Is that fair? Just looking for opinions. The guy is a nice guy and i dont mind helping but at the same time, it looks like he did it to himself... What do you guys think?

Bro he bought the car its his responsibility now you have nothing to do with it, didn't you sign over the title? and a bill of sale?

I assume you did so not your car even if it blows up 5 secs after he pulls off not your problem.

Was he asking you to pay for it? Sure you don't want to feel bad, but cars break man...that's how it is...

That's definitely not your problem man. Help the kid out but don't cover the cost on anything.

It's his car now, he broke it, he can fix it.

It's not like the engine blew or anything, clutches are part of regular maintenance, they wear out eventually just like brakes and tires. He would have had to replace it eventually anyways so its nothing unusual especially the way he was talking about driving that car. Let him deal with it.

For the most part, I agree with everyone. Car was sold as is, no warrantee expressed or implied.

How many miles, and what did you sell it for, just curious?

He actually just called to let me know. I explained that the clutch was fine in my possesion. He wound up getting a stage 3 racing clutch put in today at no cost to me whatsoever. So i guess its all good.

let him know if he calls back, car is sold as is and you are not liable for damages incurred under his possession, especially since the car was in good mechanical shape once sold

Honestly, I dont think that i need to explain that. At this point he is understanding about it and agreed that it was something he did... I guess i was more looking to see if i made the right moral decision on telling him its not my repsonibility...

It's not your problem, but props for being a stand-up guy and trying to help him out. Either way, he's going to keep breaking stuff.

Offer to rescind the sale for $500 less than what he paid. Fix it yourself and sell it again for $300 more than your original asking price.
