the idea of me travelling towards the airbag at 100mph and the airbag travelling out towards me EVEN FASTER is all I that I need to think about to wear my seatbelt always. can you picture the sound of a neck going snap?

My fiancee' used to wear her seatbelt only when I was in the car, but that was it. I always wear one, after an accident that I was in 10 years ago.
However, after the accident we were in a month ago, my fiancee' will always wear her belt now. We were in my Sebring Convertible, stopped at a traffic light, and got rear-ended by a guy in a full-size Ford van travelling at about 40 mph.
If you wanna see some pics, check this out! www.bowtiepower.com/sebring.html
Believe it or not, we both walked out of the car without a scratch or bruise, and feel fine. I was fortunate enough to get a great settlement, which allowed me to buy the Y2K Maxima SE I'm driving now.

Yes, Always.
If you have airbags, you better! If you get in a front end collision with airbags & no seatbelt, the airbag deploys and helps send you straight through the windshield --head first.. not a pretty sight.
A Trooper friend of mine has shown me pictures of several accidents where this has happened. In cases were they just shattered the windshield with their scalp, you could see hair and blood in the cracks... gross!

I investigate accidents for a living.
Let's just say I have only investigated one accident in which two people died while wearing their seatbelts (they ran off the road in excess of 100 mph in a Golf GTI. They were the back seat passengers who only had lap belts. They were ejected when the car flipped seven times...), while I have probably investigated over fifty in which the people died not wearing their seatbelts. And the sad thing was the interior compartment of most of these cars was relatively undamaged...in other words, "Room to Live" as we say in the accident investigation business.
I even investigated one accident in Nevada where a young college kid was ejected from his car when he ran off the road and was ejected when his Escort rolled. The real sad thing about this accident was the fact that he had a box of books seat-belted in the front passenger seat. The box and books were still fastened in the seat when the state trooper unbuckled them.
Seat belts do save lives.
Oh yea, I investigated an accident in Texas in which a middle age family man tried to commit suicide by running into a bridge at 70 mph in a Buick Regal. He made one mistake...he wore his seatbelt. It saved his life, although now he walks with a bunch of steel pins in his legs.

Seat belt usage
I always wear mine. Have ever since I cracked the windshield of a 63 Impala SS with my forehead. If you worked for as many years as I did in an ICU of a large hospital, not wearing one would never cross your mind. I remember a particular case, 2 brothers were riding in a car that hit a tree at 90 MPH. The one with the seat belt on had only minor scratches, the one without was in ICU for weeks. He had mush for a face, mulitpule sugeries, lots of needless pain.I can relate many other stories, like the 4 yr old boy with a crushed skull, just because Mom was holding him on her lap. Gives me the ******* just thinking about it.
Studies have shown the most dangerous thing you do on a daily basis is get in your car and drive. Just think of how many close calls you have had?
Sorry aboout rambling along, not wearing one is a huge mistake.

Does this significantly increase my risk of injury or death in any type of accident?

Same here.. I always wear my seatbelt, EXCEPT in my own car, where I forego putting the lapbelt on.

The lap and shoulder belts are designed to work together. Without the lap belt, you will slide under the shoulder belt.
Last month I wrote off an Altima SE (Type II airbags) in a head on collision at over 85kph with an old New Yorker. The airbags knocked me out cold, but combined with the seat belts they saved my life. One month later I have no remaining neck, arm or back pain and get to drive a new 2k2 Max SE for the experience.
I was in good shape before the accident, but even then the cops and paramedics couldn't believe that I kicked my way out of the car on my own and was walking around minutes after the crash. The whole front of the car was gone and the engine and tranny had broken through the plastic centre console. The seat belt bruised my hips, shoulder and chest, but the marks only lasted a couple of weeks. They also may have saved my eyes which were pushed into my skull by the force of the airbags. You have to be nuts not to wear the full belts, especially if you have airbags.

Some cars have anti-submarining technology in europe, like the front edge of the seat lifting up a few inches, and the part of the belt on your shoulder is stiched in a minute concertina pattern so that when you stress the belt the concertina portion opens up about an inch and makes the top of your body lean forward enough for the belt to really catch you instead of letting you slide under.
I was in an accident with an ill-fitting seatbelt and I partally slid under - got bruising on my neck under my chin from the belt. Had I not been wearing the belt at all I would have died.
always always always
I always wear a seatbelt, and my car does not move unless everyone is buckled up. It's really stupid not to wear one.
To those of you that don't - here's a little story for you that happened a few years ago back near my parent's house in PA. I mother was driving her car on the PA Turnpike with her 3 younger children in the car. They hit some road debris that caused a tire to blowout and the car skidded sideways, control was lost, and the car flipped over about a dozen times. Everyone was ejected from the car and body parts were found a few hundred yards away. Everyone died.
Nobody was wearing their seatbelts
When crash investigators were asked if seatbelts would have prevented the deaths, the reply was a resounding yes. There still probably would have been some injuries, but not life-threatening ones.
So 4 people lost their lives needlessly and right now there's a husband out there who lost everything he held dear all because some people didn't wear their seatbelts.
"Darwinism in action" is all I have to say.
Just my opinion
