I'd go to carpoint and compare the two on basis of HP, price, weight, etc, anything that matters to you, and whichever looks better, go with it! Personally, I'd take the Max, but that's because I have experience with a Max already and am biased.

Acura= better service, build quality and resale.
Nissan= more bang for the buck, more fun to drive.
Why do people not compare Acura and Infiniti

I considered both prior to purchasing my 2K2 SE Sterling Mist 6spd. i test drove both...actually took the max to the acura dealer parked
side by side and compared. My two cents: The Acura dealer would not come off sticker as much as the Nissan, i understood this as the Acura has a lot more equip standard and is actually priced well considering all the car has. If the Acura had offered a manual trans, i would have considered it more seriously, couldnt pass up the 6 spd and the cheaper price of the Max/sorry for the long post. ps the Acura dealer wanted 5-6K more out the door than the Max (mine has cloth, no meridian) ( it does have Bose, roof, guards, deflector, mats) and mine was 26K plus TTL

I've looked into the Acura-cls/tls and have looked at the Max in terms of purchasing and I would pick the Max. I would pick the Max because Acura has TRANNY PROBLEMS. If you go to www.acura-cl.com, they even have a section for tranny related problems. Reliability is equal on both parts but Acura has much better service. The TL-S looks better in my opinion but the Max ends up being cheaper because the dealer is willing to make a deal. The final reason I would pick a Max is because NOTHING BEATS THE VQ!!!!

Hey guys,

Well i have the TL-S, and i love it. Also my brother has a 97 maxima, and i also love that too. Hard choice. About the tranny problems,it isnt as big as everyone thinks. We took a poll over the TL and CL boards, and maybe 2% out of 7000 members had problems. I dont think thats a big deal. If you look around the acura forums you will notice that is the only real problem people talk about. So of course it will stand out. I have 11k miles on my car, and i still love it. With no problems and I have mods.

If i could do it again, i would get the TLS for sure. Unless I was looking for a 6-speed, then i would get the maxima 100%!! Oh and the sport shift in the TLS auto tranny is fun. Im not sure if the 2002 maximas have that. Tough call. ANy questions about the car ask away. Also try www.acura-tl.com great guys on that site, and most will tell the truth about th maxima.

Maxima.
1) Cost less and u get basically everything the TL - Type S gets
2) Faster
3) Larger/Safer
4) Reliability of a Maxima is great. I don't know why people here say it sucks.

Acura TL-Type S

1) looks very nice with the bodykit
2) Acura name
3) Service
-- Plus you get more respect if you drive an Acrua TL Type-S IMO

Anyways I'd pick the Maxima hands down, but that is only if you get the Maxima with leather and bose in the SE.

mmm..i always believed that nissan has better build quality cuz tl-s is build in us, max in jap(better quality control). i was gonna get a 02 tls, but instead i got a max after reading all those little problems of tls on the tl forum. doors doesn't line up right, crazy rattles, sunroof noise, loose leather seats, sqeeking power seats, seat belt problems...

just my 2c

Seat belt problem was taken care of since June of 2001. Never heard much of the loose leather seats. Mine are fine. As for the sunroof rattle, there is a fix that the dealer does for that. Doors do line up for the most part of it from owners.I did have rattles at first, but some time went by and they went away. I have no idea how since i do have 2 12" subs. I guess i just got lucky. But i do admit my brother's maxima with 65k miles on it is very well built. No rattles.

Oh and the tranny for the TLS is built in japan.

Isn't that the ironic part. The most troublesome part was built in Japan Anyway, I've been following the threads on the acura boards and people are still ****ed about the tranny issues. I don't trust the poll. The Acura dealerships have been on national backorder for trannies because of the failures. I'm sure it will be resolved soon because Honda is a good company.

true, dealers can fix all those problems for free. but for me, i don't really feel like going back to the dealer few times a month right after i bought it(very common experience often discussed in tl forum).
If it wern't for those little problems, yeah, i would get a tls with out a doubt.

I agree. Given equal transmissions (if they existed) I would choose the TL-S in Aegean Blue over a 2k2 Maxima any day of the week. The Maxima looks good from certain angles, but you can't find a bad angle on a TL. Not to mention IRS and Acura service. If the TL-S didn't have a 6 speed (I don't know if it will or not yet) I probably wouldn't buy either one. No more automagics for me.

That's always a matter of opinion, i think TL-S is too conservative... Fits in too easily with cheaper cars, but that's just me..... If i had the money to get either, i would take the Max no questions asked, but i don't and you're the one that has to make the final decision, both great cars, but Max for me....

aaack

I can't believe ya'll think the TL looks better.
The TL was 1st choice for me and my wife for features but we both disliked the looks.
I've had the AE for over a year and still love the way it looks from all over. And yes, that means the rear end as well.

I can't wait to see the 2k3...

To me the TLS is very similiar looking to the 97-99 Maxima's especially the SE.

it all depends on your taste. personally, i think that the 2k2 tl-s and 2k2 max se both look equally good, i dont know about you guys, but i like the 2k2 clear tails. if i wanted to spend the least amount of money, but get the most performance, i'd get the max with a stick, best bang for the buck, especially the base model. if i wanted a fully loaded car and best performance(stick), i'd have to get the max, but if i wanted fully loaded and an auto, tl-s all the way. all cars have problems, 5th gen max's have the paint issue, this is a fact, but if the guy from the tl forums has the right facts, that 2% of the 7000 members have tranny problems, i dont think thats a reason for blowing off a tl-s, they probably have tranny problems because the 2% drive hard or mess around with the sport shift thing whatever, both cars are nice, they are considered to be in different classes, but are both equally good cars imho, choose what you want, i doubt you'd be dissappointed on your decision.
