Everyone gets the 10% ethanol in there gas. So with every 1000 loaded 100 gallons is ethanol. E85 is a higher precentage almost 40%. The refinary where i pick up mixes the detergents, the gas stations have no clue because they dont make money off gas. They get paid barely nothing it jus help brings customers but the more it can average is what pays pennies. The logo on the store is what determines the additives so in other words your shell, chevron, exxon etc runs about the same blend but its higher then some of the other mom and pops stores.
There is a fuel distribution plant around Knoxville, TN. Sounds like they do things the same here. Fuel comes into it via a pipeline....it's all the same (non-ethanol). Once it enters the storage tanks, the plant adds the individual detergents, level of ethanol, and company markers for the individual brand (which is like a chemical fingerprint for what brand the fuel belongs to...ie: Exxon, BP, Shell, etc). Fuel then goes from tanks and into the fuel trucks to be delivered.
The guys at the distribution plant say that July 4th and New Years Day are the most exciting days of the year.....guess why!
The only thing I never learned was whether the fuel coming in was all premium and somehow got "watered down" to 89 and 87 or if each grade has it's own supply pipe?
BTW: I still run 93 ethanol free every chance I get!

the gas comes in 87 and 92/93 (whatever the "premium" is for the area), and then goes to the station in those two tanks. 89 or midgrade is done at the pump, it mixes the two grades of gas during the fillup of the vehicle.

Yup, my worst days or days i have to go to a plant and mix midgrade(bad enough i only like doin regular math) its something like 30/70 or 35/65 so in other words i have to take 500gal of prem and splash it with 975 gal of reg to make 1475midgrade. Other places we pick up jus mix it for us as we load.
