Starter groaning, hard to start

I've been having a problem starting recently. The starter on my 93 SE groans and gives a slow turn sometimes, but it cranks well enough it seems. I tested the old battery and it dropped to 7v during load, so I replaced that. however the noise still persists. I also need to hold the ignition down for a long time, even after there has been some ignition in the cylinders and the car is sort of running.

I've done a voltage drop test to the starter and it seems to be fine. Am I going to need to replace this thing?

I would try disassembling the starter and thoroughly cleaning greasing it. check the brushes while you are in there.

had the starter bench tested. sounds like the bearings are shot(?) -- metal on metal scraping as the gear turns. For only $60 to replace with a new one I'll just be doing that.

Yep sounds like the starter. I've had my car for about 2 years and have replaced it twice. No more 1 year warranties for me. I picked up my latest starter from O'Reilly's with a lifetime warranty.

Probably just the planetary gears needing lube. I would re-grease a proven starter every time, over buying an unproven aftermarket or reman starter. Hell, $2 worth of grease, or $90+ for a starter that may be worse than your original?
