Just a thought

This may seem ricey to some but I've been wondering this for a few days... If someone gets a short ram intake and then puts a scoop or vents on the hood right over the intake would it help with getting cold outside air into the engine? I mean actual vents/scoop and not the lame paste on ones... Just a question

Yes it would. Would it look very good? Not really IMO.

Well I think the vents would be more subtle. I'm not to into scoops unless it's ice cream lol would this add any of a gain or would it just help the air flow?

In the case of a stock 4th gen, the factory intake is capable of flowing everything the engine can use, The stock 4th gen also draws cold air from the opeing under the lip of the hood. In short it would make no improvent there.

If you are running full bolt ons, 3.5 swap, cams, etc, then yes it would help.

I agree. If you want to get really creative, retro a 5th gen airbox, it's been done a fwe times in the past.

That airbox is proven to support up to 250fwhp on a Dynojet, so it should be fine and not require anything too

What if I wanted to run bolt ons including a SRI and cams? would this be better? If not how would I go about retro fitting a 5th gen air box?

I would leave cams until you've got all necessary bolt ons. One step at a time before you get ahead of yourself.

Yes, but not conventional, such as a run of the mill intake.

Something like a larger MAF (though recently this has been debated for the 3.0L) and associated piping, something that can scale the MAF, timing control, direct or indirect, exhaust, such as headers, y-pipe, 3" cat and cat-back, NWP spacers, PUR engine mounts, ETL, some LW wheels/tires.

With these VQ's, it's no longer about I/Y/H/E anymore, well of course in order to get the most power.

During all of this, you should be able to at least get to 210fwhp, if not more, and then think about cams, and make it worth it and go with some head work also, whether it be major or minor.

And then bring it all together in harmony with timing and fuel., find the sweet spot for your car.

.

Sounds like something i'd wanna do. And I imagine a proper tuning would help But isn't a 3in cat back for boosted applications? And what do u mean by "timing control"?

I would like to see some before and after dyno results before doing anything to a car that involves cutting into the hood. And it would have to be a really good improvement too!

so basically cutting open the hood to allow more air to the filter is a good idea??? what about the day when its raining like hell outside and you need to drive your car back home? Not trying to be a smart *** here but this design just does not look practical to me...

I was wondering that too. I think mesh under the opening in the hood and a bypass valve on the intake might help....... Wouldn't it?
