opinions on plasti-dip

I live in the Chicago land area and go to school in Michigan, so the old maxima sure does take a beating with the snow and salt. Its a 1995 and from virginia so there is no rust yet and i had a thought, I was going to spray along the pinch welds and up in the wheels, some of the common spots for rust to form.

I have seen the cans of undercoating, but with the plasti-dip it's nice that it can be easily peeled off.

I know people have had success with using it on their wheels, so im curois if anyone has used it underneath the car for this kind of idea.

Plasti-dip is a great product but I hesitate to use it again, especially on my brand new 2012 Maxima.

On my last car (2010 Acura TL) I plasti-dipped the roof, grill and window trim with matte black. It was on the car for about 5 months, including 3 months of winter. When it was time to turn the car in a month ago the dip would NOT peel off the way its supposed too. Some sections would peel off in large pieces and others would not. I ended up spending about 5 hours to get it all off by using my finger to rub it off in small little *****.

I am not sure where I went wrong because I put 6 heavy coats of the stuff on. I hesistate to put it on my Maxima because I fear having the same problem.

Go ahead and use it as undercoating. It will definitely work great for that and you wont have to worry about removing it. It really is great stuff and I wish I didn't have a bad experience with it, otherwise I'd be doing the roof and window trim on my 2012.

well im sorry to hear about your bad experience with it. My main concern with it is that it wont hold up as well underneath the car as it does on the wheels and panels. I dont want to see peeling plati-dip underneath the car, but i will just have to put lots of coats like you did haha.

any special prepping you did?

I dont want it to capsure any moisture and just create rust either.

haha damn. I thought about spraying some other the suspension underneath too, like the dead axle and my progress RSB. the plasti-dip would be prefect for the radiator support!

I mean my car came from Virginia when it had 90K on it and I picked her up at 103K. Now she is at 145K and not a single rust bubble. "knock on wood". I wash it almost twice a week though.

If you put some thick coats on it(after prepping the surface a bit by cleaning it) It should hold up OK

I cleaned the surface with alcohol and sprayed 6 nice coats. I have a feeling the cold weather is what caused the problem with peeling it off.

I think this stuff will work great for you underneath the car. Just put it on heavy.

I've used Plasti-Dip on a few things now. My advice would be to spray at least 4 coats for underbody work. Keep in mind it works best in 70 degrees+ with no humidity for application and removal. Stuff is is amazing.
