dip stick mod.

inwas wondering if anyone ever tried modding the dip stick on a a VQ for better reading?

I have my upper pan off and after examining it I see that the front of the dipstick rubs pretty much wiping off the oil on there. I was thinking of getting a small metal shield ( piece of another dipstick ) welded to the hump on the dipstick and down to the tip. that was when you pill the dipstick out it will just tub oil off the shield...

any thoughts?

wont take but a few minutes to cut a junkyard dipstick and weld a piece of it to the tip of the dipstick.

Oh, so that is why the dipstick does not work at all with the engine on? Because if i check the dipstick with the engine running or recently running, the dip stick would be coated with oil from top to bottom whenever i put it in and pull it out.

I guess a shield to protect the dipstick from rubbing against the oil covered surfaces would be a good idea!

you only check the engine oil when the motor is off. most engines have the oil return pasage away from the dipstick so you can just shut the motor off clean the dipstick and see the oil level. i can see from my friends 350z heads in the garage that the oil returns are under the cam gears and theres no oil return passage on deck of the block, its all within the timing chain cover.

it's supposed to be cold too man, only trans gets checked while the motor is running and warmed up to running temp. get an fsm, it'll tell you all about how nissan put the car together and how to fix.
