35% tint or 45% tint?
So I am getting my tint does Friday on my Black 08 maxima with black interior. The guy at the tint shop recommends 45% but I feel like that is too light and would be a waste of money. What are your opinions? Thanks!

I'd go at least 20. I recently did 35 all the way around and it is not dark enough for me. It only really looks tinted at night. But for each there own. Google up some pics and go with what you like.

Yup, tint is a personal preference. This thread is gonna give you a ton of different opinions...Don't forget to take into account any and all tint laws that you may have in your state.

Quality of film as well. I went to a shop that was more expensive but they used Llumar film versus some brand I never heard of at the other shop. Plus they gave me a 3yr. warranty on bubbling, cracking, and discoloration. Worth the extra spent Imo.

35% is pretty typical and looks good, But don't expect to be unseen inside the car. 20% will give you a better concealment, but night time driving will be difficult on the sides in poorly lit areas, so double check for ped's and cyclists in the neighborhood at night...
Short of that, as stated, know your local laws, would suck to have to remove a nice looking tint because you got pinched.

cost vs quality to tint
Since we're on the topic of tints.....with black on black I'd look at minimum 35%, however like others have said its all personal preference, along with the local laws. Don't want to give the police a reason to pull you over if its limo'd out all around....imo
I'm also getting my tint done this week. I just scoped out 3 shops and have one more to go. Curious whats the feeling is of the quotes I received versus the quality of the film.
1. 3M Premium(lowest 3M grade) - $350 for 5 windows
2. Carbon SunTek - $175 for 5 windows
3. Viper(?) - $275 for 5 windows
4. Johnson Greyston Film - $190 for 5 windows.
Im located in LA(SantaMonica/LAX), not sure how much that matters, but worth throwing that out there.

Now I do not like anything darker than 35%. 35% is tasteful, rejects heat with the correct quality tint and is safe at night. I feel having a tint that makes the windows look "solid" and appear painted from the inside detracts from the look of the vehicle.
Another thing, I won't tint my windshield even after 17 years in Las Vegas. Every tinted windshield car I have been in has a distorted/blurry appearance when looking through it at night.
Buy a high quality 35% tint, that's my 2 cents.

I had 35% Driver and Passenger front windows and 20% everything else (no windshield) on my red 2003 Mazda6. I did this because 35% was the legal limit but I wanted it to look a little darker, which it did. I liked the 20% so much that when I sold the Mazda and bought my 2003 Glacier Pearl Maxima I had all the windows tinted to 20%, even though the legal limit where I live now (Michigan) is NO TINT on the front windows! I absolutely LOVE how it looks on a stock car (not riced our or gangsta or anything like that). Day or night, from the outside, you can barely notice that someone is in the car. From the inside I have absolutely no issues with visibility from the sides or rear, even on the moon lit roads that I drive on most of the time. It takes some getting use to, but my car is drastically cooler after sitting out in the sun all day and the privacy it provides is definitely worth it. I'll post up some pictures later of my Maxima but here's a picture of my Black with tan interior MR2 with 20% tint for reference as well as my Mazda6 that had 35% front, 20% rear.

True, it's all about personal preference and what the law allows...or should I say what the law suggests. I'll be going with a 10% on rear glass and 15% on the sides. I've done this combo on a few Impala's and never had and issue. I also put 15% on my Envoy door windows and it matches the factory tinted windows and looks pretty good. 15% is pretty good in the daylight but at night it looks pretty dark. My guy uses a high end 3M and something about a carbon or metal in the film (nothing you can see, it just looks black) for better uv protection. Usually if I see police I'll put the window down or open sunroof shade, never had an issue.
Post a pic when you get it done, we'd like to see it

I got slightly different combo on my max than most. On my I30 I used to have 30% smoke all around which was on a black/black car so they looked quite dark. Now on my Max I got 11% in the rear windshield and rear sides, then 21% on the fronts. You can see what it looks like in my sig, it's real dark at night and nicely dark during the day too.
I would never go below 30% because it's not worth it. But if you're looking for a slightly lighter look you can do the 30% smoke on a black/black car it looks good. But I would probably do either 20's all around or maybe something like I did dark in the back and lighter in front but still close to 20% in front.
And lastly, I don't recommend you go below 10% anywhere because that's where you might get some visibility issues. Depending on who you are and how good your vision is of course, 5% was too dark for me.

I think you mean above 30%?

I hate to be the one to say it - if you live in a state with tight laws on tint or leave your state where legal, or even if your right at the legal limit, you risk being pulled over under suspicion.
I don't condone driving drunk but a bad scenario would be getting pulled over under suspicion after having two beers on a day where you were dehydrated and catcha dui.

I grew up in Brooklyn, NY most of my life where I never had a problem not only with tint but I never even got a ticket there. Now in Virginia we're allowed to put 50% and above on the front windows and 35% and above on all the rears. Yeah, except when I went to get my tints done the damn cops were right there at Ziebart with their private cars all getting 20% all around. So I said oh really? **** you, I'm gonna make sure mine is darker and got 11% in the back + 21% in front
Now, here's the thing. If you have problems with driving drunk, tints are the least of your problems. If you're a grown man and you're not stupid, you should never have any problems and I don't care how dark you go. I've got one ticket for my tints, I paid $50 and told the cop to blow himself. You know they can't even do anything about tints other than give you a small fine? Just pay it and go on your day, but just make sure you don't do much of anything stupid so they don't pull you over all the time.
That's basically it, I would advice learning how to deal with cops if you ever have any problems with tints. Or somehow they tell you it's probable cause (probable cause means they have to see something clearly with their two eyes, and clearly with dark tints the opposite is true). So next time they try to tell you that BS, call em out on their probable cause and RE-ASK WHY you got pulled over.
(No offense to any cops )

In Cali it illegal to put it on the front driver/passenger windows. However there is a loop hole if you can prove medically you need it.
Anyways, it's a fix it ticket here, meaning you have to go rip it off before they will sign off on the ticket. Kind of sucks, I'm still learning the laws here.
Back in Mass where I used to live. I got pulled over once by a Statie, he went ahead and pulled out a device to check my tint limit, which was legal at the time.
Long story short, I went with 35% all around to give it a slight tint and not too dark so it stands out and becomes a reason for the police to pinch me.
Car color and interior color makes a huge difference!

Lol, I was going later this week or next to order up some new glasses. I'm gonna ask him about that. I know him pretty good and think if it's possible he'll do it. I have had issues in the past being caught without sunglasses once in the car I had to pull over so I could completely close my eyes for relief, it happened a few times just being outside too. He knows about it but I never thought to ask about a prescription for window tint on the car. I still wouldn't change my tint choice of 10% rear and 15% sides, that's dark enough for me. I've never been stopped in my truck for it but if I see Police I open sunroof shade and fold up the sun visors and roll down my window. I might be wrong but I think 20% is legal here in Ontario. They do have the tool to measure the tint %...

I have 50 on the front and 35 on the rest of the windows. Yes they are light but they look nice and never had any run ins with the law.. But personally I like dark windows.. but didnt want to risk getting a ticket....

What state is the OP in?
Also remember that the factory glass has some tint to it, roughly 80% level.
When you put on 45% then it meters around 36%
When you put on 35% then it meters around 28%
NC law is that you can have the 5 windows at 35% (3%variation) so 32% minimum metered.
This is why most places install 45% to stay legal.
Here is my car with 45% CXP Suntek
