shifting to neutral...

i have my 2k autotragic and like a lot of ppl, i yearn for a 5-spd, 6-spd would be awesome but thats not happening, so i like to play around w/ my shifter...so sometimes when im rolln down hills, ill juss put the car into 'N' and let it roll all the way down till i have to accelerate again...and sumtimes i do this quite often, like in btwn signal lights cuz if im not accelerating in btwn, the engine not only runs at lower rpms, but maintains speed a whole lot better...so im wondering is this bad for the tranny?...and i never accelerate while in neutral and put into 'd'...always 'd' wait a second for it to engage then accelerate...

I did this a few times. Shouldn't hurt as long as you don't neutral drop it. The neutral is there for a reason right?

Yup I do that all the time too. I also think as long as you don't neutral drop it it should be fine.

Just trade in for a bloody manual!

The tranny was designed to just be left in Drive and not shifted between that and neutral. You're just putting extra wear and tear on the shift solenoids. There's probably no harm in it as long as it goes back into gear smoothly. But if it's clunking or bucking then you probably shouldn't do it.

BTW, with a manual transmission you usually just leave it in gear too. The Maxima might be different because of all these fuel-cut issues, but if you're coasting in a stick shift the computer will cut all the fuel so that there will be no fuel useage. It'll only start spraying fuel again when the revs drop to a certain point near idle, like 1200rpm or so. So if you hit the clutch in a stick while going down a hill you'll actually be using more fuel becasue the engine is using fuel in neutral instead of just freewheeling in gear without using any fuel.

Tested this out in my old Camry a long time ago.

I do this as well. I think it's ok. There are enough of us doing it, if it was bad, I think we would know by now.

Shifting beween D and N isn't doing anything for you except putting a little extra ware on the transmission and it's internals. Your making it shift more then it has to. Also you get no added benefit of drag from the engine, what little there is in an auto, which in turn will use more of your brakes when you stop the car.

Your car is designed to be driven in "D" and not shifted from D to N and back again.

Shifting it into N on an auto allows the transmission to cool off more & faster. In N there is no load/friction. Or so i was told by Level 10.

Someone once claimed that casting in N was bad because the pump in the tranny stopped pumping. THis cant be true. When in N the torque converter is still spinning and the pump is still going, but there is just no drive gear engaged.

It should cause no problems...
