Cleaning K&N cone filter without kit - alternates?

How can i clean this filter without getting the kit? Currently i have a foam filter which is easy to clean (soapy solution and then some engine oil on it after it dries) but i have my old K&N waiting to be cleaned which is cotton.

After reading a few google searches i found you can clean with soap (dish soap good or detergent cause its cotton?) or a petroleum distillate (what is this? gas??) but not sure if that can damage it.

As for the oil, the foam filter i can easily coat and then squeeze out excess but not sure if i can do that to the cotton one. I have some filter oil left somewhere i bought from a dirt bike shop but i think its done or down to the last bit. i'm looking for alternates to this if possible but i'll find a bike shop that hopefully carries it.

thanks

K&N's are kinda meh for that. the company even admits that the filter relies on debris caught in the oil to catch more debris like a snowfall effect to trap stuff, paper filters are still better. i wouldnt use anything but the actual K&N stuff on the filter

i read that about paper filters too! thats *****, i like that filter. it looks better and has a small rubber velocity stack in it, oh well i think i'ma stick with my ****ty and ugly weaponR... gonna clean it an then oil it before i go to bed.

i should look into those aem dry flow filters n see if they can house a v-stack or that pop charger... no money anyways lol

Many have used liquid dish soap with success, I can't vouch for it however.

Simple Green is the same product....I've used it for years to clean my POP Chargers and no issues.

Talkinghorse on here is an Amsoil dealer and I replaced my Popcharger filter with a dry one from him. Very happy, but everyone's different.

Honestly, any cleaner that has fat dissolving properties will work.

Dawn works. Purple Power works. Simple green works. Laundry detergent works.

I have dry flow AEM and could not be happier. I had K&N on my 240sx and I think that filter was garbage.

Do Maxima's have a maf to get mucked up if you over oil the k&n after cleaning? I have the same decision for my 99 ls1 trans am. I think I am going back to paper, it is a couple of hp at most even w/ a 5.7. My Maxima is a great dd.

yea get a dry filter next time, I have AEM as well. The Spectre kit is the same stuff and cheaper so buy that instead of the K&N cleaning kit.

My mechanic recenlty washed my K&N conical with liquid soap and asked me not to worry about the oiling as it was just a money making racket of using the oil etc.The filter looks clean but i am still considering getting it oiled.

The place where i got it installed from suggested that i can use a thin layer of engine oil.Don't know if this will be ok for the filter.

I will look into the spectre but dude above me ur mechanic isn't aware that a k&n filter works on having the oil trap particles cause the filter itself is very free flowing

You're nutz for not oiling that thing back up per the mech's suggestion. And i'd never go back to him again if he thinks he knows better.

I'd stick with the stuff from k&n, i just did mine this week. Of course after you're done spraying the oil, you have to remove all the excess on the rubber, and i set mine ontop of an inverted shop fan for about 30 minutes. I know it's oil, but it actually seemed to dry up...nothing coming out with the paper towel after the fan trick.

As others have said any detergent/soap that has fat/oil dissolving properties will work. Use it with warm/hot water. Don't use any solvents because they can damage the filter.

I would only use the K&N oil on the filter.

seen the spectre filter up close, its nearly if not exactly the same as ebay filters that come with intake. i know because i just bought my 2nd and final intake setup from ebay called bcp (best car part, place racing rip off $70 shipped). they're cheap but more than good enough to drive a day or two when cleaning your real filter...

AEM dryflows are way to expensive (about $80 ship) for what you get so i'll be getting a BLOX racing filter (dry flow) and velocity stack for $100 shipped. figured i'd rather add $20 and get a velocity stack that will add a pony or two.
