In the case of Maximas, 5.7 refers to the 5th gen, the 2001-2003 cars, with a 7th generation motor. We call the 2002-2003 cars the 5.5 gen because they include the VQ35DE 3.5L motor, as the 5.0 gen had the VQ30DE 3.0L motor. It's just a play on the generation numbers, or at least that's how I've understood it.

The Altima and Maxima drivetrains are similar. Do what George said. VoltageDrop has instructions and sells products to make the swap work.

If I were you, I'd just look into 3.5s from your cars own model years. It will save you trouble.

01????

You meant 02.

And why would you want a 02/3 in your 04?

He wouldn't have to replace the timing guides (like if he went with the direct fit models)
But, then you have potential precat damage or the regular oil burning.

Use the non EVT "HR" VQ. The only extras required for it to run perfectly are the new TB pigtail and cam signal inverter. You could just leave the EVT unplugged on a 7th gen motor, but idk if there's any long term issue with that.

Does the 04 have the new ECU? If so you could just osiris that *****.

5.7 Swaps are normal these days for 5th gen you just need that CAM inverter from Voltage drop. Even 4th gen guys do them for a full 3.5 route.

I just had a 3.5 2006 maxima engine put in my 4th gen, wanted to keep my super charger so I kept the 3.0 timing.

"All Out Motor works" in Hempstead NY does these swaps on the regular. He used to be a moderator on NYC Maximas, he knows these cars inside and out. tons of Maxima guys go here as well as Viper Vadim when he needs stuff done.. cool spot to hang out at.

I take back what i said, yea he knows his stuff but if you ever want to see your car again don't bring your car to this place.. also the customer service sucks, I had to tow my car out of there to get the attention and time it needs. My car was there over an entire year and I still don't have a running car .. Stay away.

Problem was a bad coolant temp sensor so the car over heated and blew the radiator hose. But thats another story.. my point is…

I couldn't take waiting anymore to get my car back, it was there since November of 2014 and it didn't sit there because I didn't have money or was waiting for parts. The truth is; the guy just doesn't have the staff or time for project cars. He pretty much has only 1 guy that does all the heavy mechanical work.

I know other guys that have had to have their car towed out of there to get it done. Im sure others can tell you good things about this place but Im sharing my horror story so people don't get disappointed bringing their car there. So I'm now left having to pay double to have my engine pulled again, torn down, find out what the problem is and reassemble. Stay away.

Do you know this place?

If I want to swap in the 7th engine motor for my 5.5gen with the stock 4 speed automatic transmission, how do you make the newer engine which is hooked up w a CVT compatible with my ancient slushbox?

Search for "Voltage Drop" online. He makes a electrical device that you would have to have wired in so that you can utilize the VCT on the 7th gen motor.
