what does an aftermarket tach do?

what does an aftermarket tach do?
hi, sorry if this a stupid question but what do those oversized aftermarket tach's do? i know most cars come with tach's already so why do people install aftermarket ones? is there any performance reason or is it just a cosmetic thing?

The original purpose was for race cars that only come with the guages you put in them.
On a street car, ideally, they are larger and easier to read for drag racing and getting optimum shifts. They generally read more accurately than OEM tachs too.
But these days, they are mostly rice...
