05 maxima not shifting??

Just bought an 05 and was told that the transmission was a cvt, but I thought those didn't come around until 07. Anyway. When I accelerate the engine sounds loud and constant. Like it's not shifting and just accelerating? The horsepower is there, but it just seems to be loud. Every automatic I've driven has gone - accelerate shift- accelerate shift etc... Is this normal for nissans? I'm new to the maxima world and could use some insight. Thanks!

Sounds like the tranny was swapped with a cvt.

Possibly. Is there a way to check that? Also, my mpg is averaging around 18. That's not normal right? I passed up a speed sign yesterday and it clocked me at 35, but my speedometer said I was doing 45. When I'm driving and let off the gas, the engine still races and then slowly winds down. Not sure if it's supposed to do that. Like I said, I've never dealt with a cvt before.
