3.5 engine seems loud when cold, quiet when hot?

Ok i have an 02 I35, I dont know why on warm days or when the car reaches operating temp it so quiet, But on cold days its a little louder and i dont mean loud as in exhaust leak loud or any engine related noise loud, and driving is not affected at all so i dont know why the sound difference when warm/ hot day/versus cold days. Anyone experience this ?

My I35's the same. I just chalk it up to the car being 14 yrs old.

These engines are super smooth once nice and warmed up.

^My engine got particularly noisy when I put a Fram ToughGuard filter on during the last oil change. Took that POS off and replaced it with a Nissan filter and all's been good since.

Some oils & filters cause more racket than others.

Yeah i got my oil changed with a synthetic blend, they put some oil filter on that ive never heard of but its def not a fram. Almost at the 3k mile mark to change the oil again so i may just get a mobile 105 i think thats what most pple were recommending or purolator brand.

^A syn blend can easily go 4000+ miles. The days of 3K oil changes are long gone.

So that was the issue! Low oil pressure. Good job, fram, trying to blow up motors.

Yeah, I was surprised. I've had excellent luck with that filter in my Hondas. Probably because it's basically the same as a Honda A02, except without the Honda logo and blue paint.

Sticking with Nissan filters on this car from here-on-out.

Those little filters are scary in comparison

My daughters 03 is very LOUD when it's cold. I make sure it's warmed up before it's driven anywhere. It kind of sounds like it's knocking. Once warmed up the motor is very quiet. Like today it's 85° out. I needed to use here car as mines in the shop getting an o2 bung welded on. It hasn't been ran in about a week but it started right up and is whisper quiet. I have mobil 1 0-30w in it and run the tc-w3 oil in the gas.
I have tried everything I can think of to stop the noise when it's cold but have had no luck at all. It scares me bur it's been like this since I got the car 47,000 miles ago. It is louder now than it was then but not by to much

Any ideas?

The principal reason is that until the engine warms up, the lubrication is much worse than when the engine warms up.
Why? The viscosity of the oil recommended for our cars was chosen to maximize the interval where the oil has the ideal viscosity (about 10 or so). Because our engines typically operate at 200-300' F, Nissan recommended 5W-30 oil because it has the ideal viscosity (~10) within this temperature range. However, its viscosity is much worse (in the 100-300 range, or 10-30 times worse) when operating below 70'F.
That's why my Maxima is now running on 0W-30 instead of the factory recommended 5W-30 (no, Nissan wasn't wrong when making the recommendation, it's just that 0W-30 synthetic oils did not exist at that time).

There are other reasons, such as worn-out chain tensioners, but they are secondary. They only apply within the fist few seconds of starting the engine.

I know. It's only when it's cold. Above 65° out it doesn't happen. Also when it's cold I just have to warm up the car and it's smooth and quiet. Very weird
