2003 Maxima A/C
Did it myself
I have had similar issues with my 2003 I35. I took it to a local mechanic and I received a quote for $2000 to replace the compressor, condenser/drier, AC hoses. I live in the south and having AC is a necessity when the summer temperature approaches 100 degrees. But I do not want to spend $2000 on a 16 year old car. I bought all the parts from amazon and rock auto for about $350 including a pump to refill the new system. I took my time and swapped out the parts myself. Now my vent blows a cool 35 degrees air even when the outside is a scorching 100 degrees.
Your compressor is likely failing due to its age. Although it sounds complicated, it really isn't too bad swapping out the compressor especially if you are a DIYer. The compressor is bolted to the engine with 4 long bolts. When you swap out the compressor, you need to also swap out the drier. I went ahead and changed both the drier and the condenser since the drier comes with the condenser as a pre-mounted bundle for just a few dollars more.
Just remember that you need to release all the refrigerant before you start pulling apart AC components. Once you put all the new parts in your car, you need a vacuum pump to create a vacuum and check for leaks. If it passes the leak test, you can go ahead and refill it with fresh refrigerant.
I did mine in 1 day but I took my time doing it since it was my first time doing car AC work. It is quite satisfying driving in the summer heat with 35 degree ice cold air blowing through my vents. It is even more satisfying knowing that I saved myself almost $2000 doing it myself.
