I think this is more reputation issue than ignorance. Fact is, the domestic car makers have been producing crappy cars for such a long time that it has become a mindset that will take a while to let go of. It's only in the late 80s that they've woken up and realized that if they don't build a good car, people won't buy it.
I agree that today's domestics are better, but let's see just how long they'll keep building them that way. For too long it has always been about what they could get away with and maximizing profits.
