Best auto tranny service?

I just talked to my mechanic, and he told me not to go the sucker pump method because it forces the *NEW* fluid through the *OLD* filter, and that doesn't sound good. What he said he would do is drop the pan, drain it, take the valve body off, clean it real good, put a new gasket and fill with the new stuff. Any one have an expirience like this? What should I do?

Drain, refill, drive a few miles, drain, refill again and enjoy!

Assuming that you don't have loads of gum and varnish build up I would have the following done:
- Remove and clean pan. Whatever crud you have in the trans will settle in the pan. The only way to remove it is to wipe out the pan.
- Spray the filter screen with cleaner and blow it out. It's only a wire mesh screen and not a filter like the oil or air one.
- Have a full fluid exchange done. Pulling the pan only gets about 1/3 of the old fluid out. A fluid exchange machine hooks up to the transmission cooler lines and diverts the old fluid into a tank feeds in new fluid. It doesn't have any pump, and only makes use of the pump in the transmission. If he doesn't have one of these machines, go somewhere that does.
I doubt that you need the VB removed and cleaned. I would get either Mobil 1 or Valvoline Maxlife ATF put in.

I had it done this way and it didn't clean it all the way. I then had the magic sucker pump and that totally cleaned my tranny. The sucker pump flushes the tranny fluid out several times with new fluid so all the old stuff (including crud in the wire mesh) should have come out. Most people on the forum recommended the flush.
