Is this a slipping clutch?

While trying to accelerate on the highway (4th or 5th gear) the tach shoots up then slowly begins to fall back down and match the actual vehicle speed. I am not experiencing these problems in the lower gears unless I shift rapidly at high RPMs, then the engine doesn't bog but kinda sounds 'stuck' at a particular RPM. Am I just shifting incorrectly ?

Yup.
Time for the ACT II. I guess after we have spent about $2K on my wife's VW (that has 100,000 less miles) fixing misc. items over the last two months she can't deny me preventive maintenance items, and just in time for the dry-kit.

Yeah only when your clutch is slipping does your speedo go up while your tach is on it's way down I do a lot of highway driving as well (500 miles every other weekend) and my slipping clutch got REALLY annoying. You can't go wrong with the ACT.

Probably too late, but Nissan replaced my 95 Max clutch in 96 under a
warranty accomodation.
They admitted that the early clutches were too light.
It showed the same symptoms you describe.

I think you were just lucky. Brakes, clutches, etc. are usually the last thing a dealer will agree to replace under warranty since they are subject to wear and tear.

As I remember the car had about 14K on it at the time but he did find a Nissan reference on the computer service link.
