Cat is reading a 40 degree difference from in front and behind

Yeah, I had my car tested at the exhaust shop today and there was only a 40 degree difference from in front of the cat and behind it. The guy said it should be around 100. So should I just go ahead and gut it? This is something I guess I HAVE to do myself seeing that 2 sketchy shops have turned me down. Is it going to be worth it? I wonder if this will be the answer to my performance loss.

Re: Cat is reading a 40 degree difference from in front and behind

A low temperature loss through the cat indicates a HIGH exhaust flow rate through it...if the cat was clogged, it would cause the cat to heat up more than usual and you would see a greater temperature drop across it. Just cause Bubba mechanic says there should be a 100 degree drop doesn't mean it's correct. He may be referring to what he's seen in the past. It's just a reference point. Your temp drop is less than he's seen which means it's flowing better than he's seen.

Don't gut it. It's likely operating correctly. Look elsewhere for your problem.

Can anyone help me out here? What should the temperture difference be before and after the cat? Do I have a problem here? Thanks for all your input!

I've had the same problem as you...and VeeTec have had...and it's NOT the cat...I tried that...and it gave me a couple HP...that's all.....I'm now suspecting the injectors or possibly the ECU........drop me a line...I'm as confused as you and VeeTec are about all this

if you are worried about the Cat...get a test pipe from Warpspeed for 25 bucks...and try that out...and if that doesn't give you a MAJOR boost in power..than it definitely wasn't your cat...

Briguy, have you tried resetting your ecu??? I'm going to gut my cat, and reset my ecu. If that doesnt do it, Im going to look at the knock sensor?? I dont know much about this though? Where is it located? Easy to replace? Cheap?

yes...I've reset my ECU. DON'T gut your cat...just e-mail Dallas at WSP and get a test pipe...the gutted cat won't flow right becuase of it's weird shape....I did the knock sensor it was a waste of $115 (I got it for a discount list price is $177!!). If you're not throwing a code for the knock sensor...you don't need a new one. Knock sensor is located between the cylinder banks under the intake manifold...if you look from the drivers side of the engine...down past the FP regulator it's the black thing with a screw in the middle...all the way under the manifold...you'll need a flashlight to see it. If you have small hands you can replace it without removing the manifold...but it's a B!TCH..and you will cut up your hands reaching down there...again...knock sensor is not worth it...and neither is gutting your stock cat...
