4th and 5th Gen Manual Transmissions

Is there a reliability issue with the Gen 4 manual transmission? I am
looking at buying one and the previous owner mentioned that the
output shaft failed and took out 3 of the gears too. I noticed that
the transmission was changed in 2000 with the 5th generation. Anyone
have knowledge of these issues?

Thanks

Rick

According to Nissan, the 5th gens have a stronger 2nd, 3rd and 5th gear.

I would not trust nissan quality control after my experience.
Long story short- transmission internal parts need to be shimmed to the thousandths of an inch. I have 2 transmissions, and in both transmissions the shims for the input shaft from both transmissions

Meaning if transmission one had shims A for the input shaft and shims B for the output shaft, and transmission 2 had shims X and Y, shims A and X were the exact same and the same goes for shims B and Y! I do not know if this was an isolated incident, but many people on this board have problems in the 4 gen with differential bearings, and I'm sure countless others have the problem but just do not know it

Read my post about it in the maxFAQs in the 4 gen forum as well as http://forums.maxima.org/search.php?...der=descending
