Major Problem - Probably Nothing

When my car is in D it can go in N with just a simple push. It doesn't have the safety lock. How can I fix this? I noticed my car was in N several times now, but lucky for me I was already stopped.

I don't know if I described it right, but you know when you have your car in lets say 1 or 2 and you have to press the button to change it from 1 to 2, well I don't have to press any button to go from D to N it just slides with a simple push. Is it supposed to be this way?

Maybe this isn't an emergency, but what happens when I am driving 50mph and my car drops to N? My friend said nothing will happen at all so I guess I am straight. Just making sure.

Thanks
-Rodney

The only car I have ever been in that has a sefety going from 1-2, 2-3, and 3-d is my wifes mustang. It makes it a b!tch to manual shift. You should only have to push the button in P, R, and downshifting all the way to 1, at least thats how it is in mine.

Isn't that a feature of the rare and famous Automagic transmission?

That is normal in most automatic transmissions. (At least the ones I've driven)

You do have to be careful though because of this. When I was driving cross country to Las Vegas a while back, I had the cruise set on about 95 and the radio wide open. When I reached for something in the passenger side floorboard an accidentally leaned on the gearshift and popped it into neutral. Luckily, I noticed my RPM gauge shoot up and disengaged the cruise before I blew up something!

if you shift it into N while driving, do you have to make a complete stop before engaging gear?

Actually, in maximas the cruise control disengages when you put it in neutral or press the brakes. So nothing could have blown up.
True.

Maximas do not have a shift lock for the 1-2,2-3 shift. There is a lock for the 3-2, 2-1 shift though.

No, you can put it in drive from neutral at any speed, as long as you aren't pressing the accelerator.
I thought the transmission would keep the gears spinning at the same speed as the engine RPM regardless of if you hit the accelerator while in neutral or not.

As far as a shift lock goes, will that little red lever in front of the shift lever work when you have the car in drive. I know it works in park so you don't accidently shift out of that, but I wasn't sure about drive.

I hate when they do that. Also if theres someone in the back they take the rear headrest off and when I lean back on it its not there.
